Hi guys.

Please excuse this question if it has been asked before, but the gear change on my 98 Ibiza (ABF engine) is terrible. I know cable change boxes ain't exactly great but this is bad!

I think i've tracked it down to serious play in the gear selector stack...i assume this movement shouldn't be like it is?

Can some one point me in the right direction to fix this issue? Is it a case of new bushes, or can the whole thing be changed?

The car is being built as a road rally car so slick and swift gear changes would be prefered rather than giving the gear stick a stir and hoping for 3rd!

Will be starting a build thread soon so keep yer eyes open

Cheers in advance.

I had a similar problem a few years ago. Also ABF engine.

I noticed that the 13mm nut on the selector lever, where the cables attach, on top of the gearbox was a bit loose, which had allowed the levers to move slightly.

I could see ( from the dirt ) that the levers had moved about 1mm. After aligning the levers back to their original position and tightening the nut, the problem was fixed.

Might be worth having a look at that too mate ?

Cheers mate.

Will certainly have an investigation (been busy fixing the locks and making the car secure!).

Someone on a different forum has suggested I fit the whole selector system (gearstick forward) from a mk4 golf as it gives a better change. Also suggested 5 speed Audi TT gear stick to reduce throw. All sounds like good suggestions though and the guy knows what he's talking about....we'll see eh? Just kidding.

Cheers for the heads up though.
