Leon 1.4 fr 140BHP start/stop "power consumption is high"

I have an issue with a seat leon 140BHP since I brought the car from Listers SEAT - the start stop does not work and never has done since I brought it.

The car has been back to the garage twice since I brought it for this reason, they say there are no fault codes and the battery is in perfect health. On the multimedia display under "car" the start / stop info displays "Power consumption is high", I can turn off everything, fans, radio, lights and nothing resolves this issue.

I recently borrowed a "carista" obd2 device and I turned off the start/stop via the ECU and then turned it back on again, it worked for a day then went back to Power consumption is high.

I'm kind of stuck, I feel like it should be down to the garage to fix/compensate for but on my last visit they assured me there was "nothing" wrong and pleaded with me to just "enjoy my new purchase".

Are you sure you're charging the battery up enough for stop-start to actually work?
Go for a good 20 minute drive on the motorway and turn the air conditioning off when you stop, that pulls a lot of power.

Yeah, when I brought the car I took it on a 2hr + motorway drive, no air con on - still nothing. Generally my work commute is 25-30mins mainly dual carraigeway 50+mph

unplug the cable from the sensor on the battery terminal for a few seconds;)

Brought from seat listers Coventry, took it back there twice, never had much luck with them if I'm honest.

Vacuum sensor sounds promising, would this usually bring a fault or fail silently?

Assuming you didn't buy it new is it possible that the battery has been changed? I believe that start/stop requires a certain type of battery (very pricey). Although your battery shows to be in 'perfect health' it may not be correct spec. Also seem to remember reading somewhere that if a battery is changed it has to be setup to the car in some way.

Neither of the users on the vwroc forum mentioned a vacuum sensor fault code.

If your car is not new it is possible that a previous owner turned off start/stop using vcds or obdeleven.

To protect the battery, start/stop will not operate when the battery voltage or ambient temperature are below preset values. It is possible to change these parameters using vcds or obdeleven.

Ok. So tonight I cleared fault code and turned off start stop via carista and then turned back on. Start stop worked fine on way home. I will check the battery later, is there a stock battery model number or something like that?

Car was brought used, not sure what the below code is, will do some digging.

VAG fault code 197644 relates to the control circuit for the fuel tank flap.

VAG use two types of battery - EFB (enhanced flooded battery) and AGM (absorbent glass mat). Batteries are marked accordingly.

EFB batteries are fitted to lower specification cars (like my SE) fitted with stop/start. AGM batteries are fitted to higher specification cars with larger electrical loads.

Batteries are coded by entering these details using vcds or OBDeleven:

Manufacturer

Serial number

Battery type

Battery capacity

Entering this information simply allows the battery management system to optimise charging cycles.

Coding is a two minute job and nobody should pay for it when changing a battery.

Thanks @EFF11.

I will try and find out which battery it is, thanks for this. Hopefully it is the battery (I wouldn't usually say that, but it won't be me paying for it! ;) )

So, checked the battery, it's an Exide EFG battery. I think the recommended battery for my model is an AGM? Seat Leon 1.4tsi 140ps technology Fr ST. Not sure what the stock battery is for my car though so will try and dig that out.

Try putting your reg number into the Euro Car Parts website and looking for recommended batteries, battery (Exide AGM) for my car (2016 MY Leon ST FR 1.4ACT 150ps) is £275!!!

The FR needs an AGM battery. If you fit an EFB battery instead it will struggle, especially in the coming months, and sooner or later there will be problems.

If you are going to change, then shop around. Halfords have their own brand 70Ah AGM battery with 4 year guarantee for £162. That seems a fair price.

Some retailers try to charge for an "expert" using "special equipment" to code the battery. If you encounter this tell them you know exactly what is involved, it is a two minute job and if they want to sell you a battery they will have to code it. Surely it's not fit for purpose if it is not coded.

This is the coding for my Exide battery using OBDeleven

Battery Adaptation - OBDeleven

Module 19 – Gateway
Security code 20103

Adaptation

Battery adaptation

Rated 59Ah
Manufacturer TU3
Serial number F5Ø127RØ53
Technology EFB

TU3 is the code for Exide .

I know nothing about Carista, but if it is capable of displaying the battery coding, that could be interesting.

Cheers guys. I will get on to the stealers to get them to put the right one in. Carista is pretty limited if I'm honest, no ability to code it yourself, all preset mods and diags

Mine faulty Start/Stop was traced to high current in a Brake light unit they replaced the rear light unit and fault has never returned
Carried out under Warranty
This was something I never imagined

our car completely died without warning in august, RAC diagnosed the battery and the only option at the time was to purchase Halfords own AGM battery which cost £166. They told me it needed specialist fitting but no-one was available for several days. We needed our car and did the battery ourselves because the minute we turned the car off with the old battery it wouldn't start again nor accept any charge. I spoke to a VW mechanic and our local SEAT garage and both said the battery didn't need coding even though we had upgraded it to the AGM from the previous EFB. Not checked our start/stop as I always turn it off when I get in the car as I hate it!

***UPDATE***

Phoned the stealers, they are adamant that it is the correct battery - even though all of the internet battery finders say otherwise, RAC for example suggest:
BOSCH AGM BATTERY TYPE 096

096 AGM Battery 3 Year Guarantee
Amp Hours (Ah): 70Ah
Cold Cracking Amp (CCA): 760

My battery:
EXIDE EFG Battery
12V 59Ah 320A DIN 640A

A case has been opened with SEAT UK now (by myself), will keep you all updated! :censored:

you have exactly the same battery we had. Our car is the 14 plate 1.4 FR. Exide EFB 12v 59ah etc. infact its still in the garden ready to be taken to Halfords to dispose of.
