Guys I am doing an oil and filter change on my car tomorrow, I know how to remove the sump, and maybe a silly question, is the oil pick up pipe INSIDE the sump, or on the outside??
never actually cleaned one or replaced one as yet
many thanks
Tom

To be fair to him he was probably looking at the oil return pipe from the turbo. It does run outside the sump and then passes into it.
Bert/tom, if you get the haynes manual for the VW Golf and Bora 2001 to 2003, manual number 4169, then it covers most of the engine/gearbox/brakes and most other major mechanicals of the 180bhp cupras. Will be a big help when doing engine work and saves getting oily hands on your phone/laptop trying to look at an online guide etc.
Yeah, I had seen the oil return from turbo, but never done this to any of my previous cars, but cracked on, 2 hours and all sorted! Now to sort fuel injector! My bad, poxy clip that holds injector to rail was heavily corroded! Snapped and oh dear fell off and dropped a quarter tank in 3 miles all over the road :-( now to source a new bloody clip!
Good work on the sump clean up. Sorry to hear about the injector, lucky it didn't catch fire. You can use http://www.vagcat.com/ to find the part number
