Leon FR PD170 TDi Injector problem

Another one bites the dust....

Hi all,

just been reading this thread with interest. My 57 plate TDi FR (70k) failed today whilst in the outside lane of a dual carriageway. No power but managed to coast onto the hard shoulder. RAC collected and towed me to an independent garage. RAC plugged in their diagnostics tool and cited a failed injector.
I've only owned the car for 2 weeks after buying from an independent dealer and am quite shocked by what I'm now reading.
Hopefully the aftermarket Autoguard warranty will cover the part(s)/labour once fully diagnosed but I'll sure be on to Seat UK requesting all 4 be changed. Will keep you posted on proceedings.

Ours cut out recently while doing a Manual DPF regen on our solus pro(been having a lot of problems with it), got it towed back to the garage and found out injector 4 had failed, called seat uk and they are footing the Bill, up to now the Bills at £2500 (replacing all 4 injectors) Full Seat History and 100k on the clock i asked about changing the loom as well and they said they used to have problems with the looms but they wont know the condition untill they strip it down, So the bill could be higher!!! I'm looking forward to getting it back next week as i hate driving the old cupra and i want to get that sold

Enoughs Enough. Getting rid of the Leon next weekend. Don't like playing Russian Roulette with my wifes LIFE. I feel it's not a question of if but when.

Looks like mine has gone too. 07 plate with 45K on the clock. Broke down on the way home from work thu engine cut out and would not restart. Got towed to an independent garage near home and they have diagnosed injector failure Supply voltage A for injectors circuit malfunction and Supply voltage for fuel injector group A open circuit.

Can't believe injectors are failing like this it must be a design fault and the prices they're charging for a replacement are way too expensive!

Thanks for all the help and advice in this thread and forum. I'm going to phone Seat UK tomorrow and see if they will do a goodwill gesture repair. Failing that will and independent garage be able to carry out the replacement or is their an ECU re-flash/upgrade etc also required?

There's a garage near me who have apparently done several. Said he did 2 on a passat for £600. Everyone I speak to says £400 for an injector is ridiculous, and nearly a grand to fit that and a loom is clearly taking the p**s.

Hi MJ i get the idea that you know what your talking about here. Looks like I may be suffering the same problem, I have a 07 leon FR Tdi, I was happily driving along M20 at 70ish and without warning nothing!! luckily light traffic and I managed to wrestle the unpowered steering to hard shoulder. AA recovered me when his diagnostic machine (all be it basic) did not show any fault. Of course it being bank holiday weekend nothing is open so I dumped the car at local SEAT dealer.

They have been looking at it since Tueday and inform me that there is no fault code stored so they don't know exactly what has happened. I did mention that a few of us are suffering this problem with this particular engine and age but I was fobbed off with it would have shown a fault code if it was an injector.

They have called me today saying that they are still not sure what the problem is but have ordered a relay (no further explanation) with a view to fitting it on Tuesday !! (another bank holiday of course)
My question now is as you mentioned in your post is this relay likely to fix the problem or is the root cause still likely to be the injectors ?
Ok Garage just got back to me (It has been in a week) No 3 Injector duff and wiring loom burnt out repair cost £900 ish all in.

Spoke to SEAT UK stated my case, dangerous fault, when will it happen again ? etc etc. The service agent suggested that a goodwill gesture may apply as long as service prtocols were adhered to. I informed her that the service records were good and that if a goodwill gesture was to apply I would like it to be extended to all four injectors being replaced. Service agent checked with garage what the fault was and the service history then called me back to say that SEAT UK will pick up entire bill for all four injectors and wiring loom, result!!

Thanks to all for advice and contribution to this forum and i would encourage anyone with this fault to accept nothing less than replacement of all injectors and wiring loom. To be perfectly honest though SEAT UK did not even attempt to defend their position and agreed to cover cost without protest.

Well Done mitchathome good result!

After I phoned seat UK this they said they needed to diagnose the car with their own equipment at a main dealer before they could look at any form of potential goodwill gesture. They booked me in at my local main dealer and I had to pick up the tab to have it towed their, they said they would not cover transport costs at this time.

Have to play the waiting game I guess and they don't even have any cars to lend me with it being just after a bank holiday weekend so I'm also a bit stuck getting to work!

How about if I do not have full SEAT service history they will likely cover the bill or not ??

Spoke to garage today and injector 3 was faulty. Garage said they replace the loom as part of the instructions from SEAT. The garage spoke to SEAT on my behalf and agreed to foot 100% of the bill. Really impressed, however after reading on here again tonight I will call SEAT tomorrow to discuss replacing the other three or at least guaranteeing covering the cost for future injectors. I am worried about the safety though!

I had an injector fail, unfortunately the car was bought from a non-SEAT dealer and had 2 instances of non-SEAT servicing. SEAT would not give anything toward it because of that.
Gearbox also failed 6 months later and they wouldnt give anything toward that either.

Had I known what ***** they would be, and how the car is built with faulty parts, I would never have bought the thing.

I saved for 5 years to buy the car, then ended up getting in to debt by £4000 to get it back on the road TWICE. Needless to say I won't be buying SEAT again.

Filing a case with VOSA anyway as I still have three more injectors with manufacturing faults that could fail at any time. Nice.

Back again

:censored:

Add me AGAIN [:@] dealing with SEAT Customer Services... shall see how it goes.

SEAT want full Service History & car taken into a local SEAT Dealer for inspection before they consider a good-will payment! But at least they said these words first, they're well aware of the problem.
I only have one issue - first injector replacement & 70k service by an independant, so could be a struggle. Shall be quoting all the above posts in future correspondence!

Shall keep you posted...

@paulfs, how much did the independent garage charge you mate, was it a used injector they fitted and why did you not go back to them this time? Just ask because if I keep mine and SEAT don't contribute this time then I will go to an independent garage if it happens to the other 3.

Evening Bud,

I went to JKM Motor Services in Pompey, a site sponsor, they were quick & thorough. I went too them for the initial diagnostic, the only place I knew close to where I had the car recovered from, they found the fault & sorted it with no fuss - if I was more aware of some of the positive SEAT responses above I think I would have been banging on SEATs door first, but I must have the car for work so needed it sorted sharpish. But now I've seen the above I decided to make contact with SEAT Customer Services first this time & in fairness they seem mildly positive (at the moment!).

Costs, I had a VAG replacement Injector at £465 & Labour up at £165 - this is a touch high as had a 70k Service as well, but the Labour costs billed as one.

I would hope that if you stay within SEAT for servicing etc they should "cover" the remaining three injectors - I'll be pushing for this myself, I would like them to replace the remaining three now & the wiring loom. I do a lot of motorway driving & engine cut-out is not welcome - it's not safe & I certainly won't feel safe driving it in the future, particularly if kids in the car!!!

Hope helps,

Result!!!

Well what too say!!!
Subject too confirmation that a second (or more) Injector has failed SEAT Customer Services have confirmed that they will cover the cost of replacing ALL remaining Injectors AND the Wiring Loom. They have also confirmed that they will re-imburse me for the first failed Injector, albeit Parts only as this first replacement was carried out by a reputable independant!
Not bad, not bad at all me thinks at the moment - Dealer Investigation to go first - but all sounding positive.

SEAT appear to accept that this is now a known recent fault, particularly in Leon FR TDi, although they did say that it's NOT a common fault!
In discussions their apparent course of action in the first instance is to replace the first failed Injector only , if it happens again, or it was two or more that failed, they say that they will replace all remaining Injectors AND the Wiring Loom at their cost, at a SEAT Dealer.
They also want to see full a Service History (SEAT Dealer stamps would be better). But I got the impression that if Servicing carried at a reputable Independant they may still entertain some goodwill gesture - not totally sure on this as I have SEAT Servicing, but I reckon would be worth pursuing all the same.

Car being recovered tomorrow & under Investigation Monday next week - shall see how it goes...

Well the main dealer diagnosed injector 2 had failed. They wanted to replace injector 2 and the wiring loom cost around £1,000. Told them I was speaking to Seat about this because injectors should not fail at 45K miles and was hoping for a goodwill repair. Seat UK offered to pay 100% parts and labour for the repair. I then proceeded to ask about all four injectors because I had lost confidence in the car and didn’t want another to fail while driving on the motorway with the kids. 24 hours later Seat have got back to me and offered to replace all four injectors and the wiring loom at their expense. They said they had to check up on the last service which I had done at an Independent but Seat approved garage. All now approved and I’m just waiting for them to get the parts and complete the work.

Result!!! Thanks for all the help and advice in this forum you guys have saved me several thousand pounds!!!

How are you finding the car drives after having all four injectors replaced? Seat UK have said that the replacement injector is a revised part.
