Turbo Whistling

Hi Guys, hoping you can help me, again...

My PD150 turbo seems to be whistling between 1500 and 2000 rpm then just stops, only under 50% plus acceleration and sometimes with white or black smoke, sometimes none.

If I pull off a boost hose, the noise continues, if I remove the vac hose to the actuator it stops.

I've run a test on vagcom and have the below:

I'm hoping it's just the n75 or actuator at fault, there is no nociable loss of power, I have a celtic tuning stage one map and EGR delete. The turbo is just over 2 years old, brand new Garrett, done about 15k since fitting. Remapped I've done about 4k, nearly all motorway driving sat about "motorway" speeds.

I have noticed a small hole near the cat, could this be part of the problem?

Any ideas guys?

Interested to hear opinions on this myself as mine does this as well and I'm pretty convinced it's not a boost leak.

Does your noise continue as the turbo slows down as well as under load between that RPM range?

No, as soon as I take my foot off, or even back off acceleration the noise stops. I did notice that there is a clear difference between this whistling and the normal turbine noise (I can hear both at the same time)!

I've been out and have a vacuum tester on the pipe to the actuator and it holds a vacuum fine, didn't move at all from 4psi for nearly 5 minutes (I know it's not a massive amount, but not bad for an asthmatic set of lungs)!

Next step for me is to work out how to run an n75 test to make sure that's not the problem, go around my boost pipes again and see if someone will actually help me check the turbo bearings!

Still haven't worked out how to run the N75 test on vagcom, maybe I need to use a newer version, but that involves money :(

I've been around and used plumbing tape and cable ties on all boost pipes, but it's still making the noise, and will intermittently loose power and smoke a bit, I don't know if it's possible, but it felt like limp mode, but with no dash lights or codes in VAG-COM.

I took it out last night, gave it some beans when it was warm, power was spot on, no smoking, then after about 45 minutes of driving it lost power and smoked a lot. Left it sat for an hour, drove home, and it was fine again. The noise is still there between about 1500-2000 rpm on anything over mild acceleration...

Any ideas what I can look at or do?

I've got a mechanic cleaning the turbo next week and fitting a decat as my cat has a hole in it. :(

yeah, turned out to be damage to the turbo inlet turbine. :(

Now I have a hybrid turbo and 230bhp though, so I came out on top I think :)
