Has anyone ever fitted one of these boxes before to their car5 from these guys

http://www.tdi-tuning.co.uk/

I trust its not your usual 20p resistor in a box,i know its not going to be as good as a remap but like the idea of taking it off if it causes me clutch to slip or any other issues.

They sell them off cheap on ebay for about £80 i wouldnt buy from their site direct. They do the job as well as any other tuning box but as has been said they are still always only tricking the ecu so not the best way of tuning.

I WAS thinking of tuning boxes, but I've heard many rumours of components breaking etc. after a few thousand miles of running these boxes.

I personally think best bet is to get it remapped by a specialist company who can check your engine for any faults before hand, and to also make sure the map is suitable and specifically for your car. may cost a bit more, but in the long round will most definitley be worth it.

Hi, Have had one of the Tdi tuning boxes for a year now.Took a few weeks to set up properly. Certainly improves bottom end torque, and the biggest bonus for me,around 5Mpg more.Doing 500 miles a week miine has certainly paid for itself:D

tuning unit

i had a tuning unit on my old alhambra tdi for 3 years and i was so impressed i sold them for 6 years,i stopped due to the poor exchange rate and the big influx of cheap chinese units ,my supplier was from germany and between the tdi-tdi pd units i only had 1 faulty one in 6 years and this was actually sold to a friend in my own town.please be aware of so called digital claims as to be honest you would not know what is inside the tuning unit.

Maybe the rumours I've heard about tuning boxes have been those cheap chinese ones then!

From your experience Javorb, do the tuning boxes you sold ever match the claims of bhp and torque etc which was actually stated? As I've also heard of tuning boxes (for example) claiming to make a 110bhp engine to 140bhp, but in reality only makes it 120bhp, or something along those lines!

tuning unit

to be honest i had never dynoed a car myself but i have had a few replies from buyers who had ,they all were close to the figures ,one guy from glenrothes in fife had a 1-9cdti astra 150hp he also had a pipercross air filter and his car dynoed at 197hp ,this was with a digital unit that was claimed to give 25%+,but to be honest tuning units will work differently on one car to the next and dynoe results are only as good as the guy who is operating the dyno,to be fair i have driven quite a few tdi and tuning units work very well on tdi cars, although analogue ones dont work as well on the 2.0tdi .a good digital unit will not plug into the temp sensor as some digital ones on ebay do ,a good one plugs into ther main round loom at the back of the engine and changes each injector separately.i am looking into supplying new units and i have enquired about advertising on this forum as i can also supply exhausts ,air filters/induction kits and suspension products:)

Yeah I have one of those boxes fitted and again got it from ebay from them for about £80, I have had no problems at all and seems to go well, I can tell the diff. when I get into the Ibiza (same engine and box but should be a bit lighter) as the Vario has the tuning box fitted and has more low down grunt, I know its only 90bhp but she is quick off the line ;)

i had a dt-uk tuning box in my 53reg audi a4, and it was fine. had it rolling roaded before and after (was much colder on the first run at westec) and got 140bhp (cant remember torque off top of head, it was over 2 years ago!) and after i got 165bhp and 250lbs torque at tsr (with their fan which was as much use as an asmatic blowing into the grill)

Edit: forgot to mention, dads got one for his volvo xc70 d5 - had it for a couple of years now and its been faultless. just had to make sure that it wasnt right next to the engine as it got pretty hot, however hes taped his to the air intake

i also had a DTUK crd2 tuning box on my astra cdti 150, cant fault them at all. i bought this because it could easily be removed again if the car neede to go to the dealers at all. i had it rolling roaded an it produced 204bhp an 317lbs an it was realy easy to adjust to my liking

as i have said before dont buy a £20 ebay one ,if you buy for under £100 it will be an analogue unit that plugs into the fuel pressure sensor,a good digital one will cost around £250-300.i am going to fit a digital one from a new supplier as soon as i get my car:D

Hmmm, if a good digital one is £250 - £300. You can get a good quality remap for that! What's the advantages of a decent plug in box, over a decent remap???

If you use a tuning box, the MPG figures qouted by the onboard computer will probably become somewhat optimistic, as the ECU is not aware of the extra fuelling going on.

And if you use one of the cheap, fuel-temp-sensor-resistance-altering type tuning boxes, your MPG will become ridiculously optimistic !

a tuning unit can easily be removed for warranty work or fitted to another car or sold ,i have also had a unit that plugs into the obd port that has 3 maps on it and when you change cars you can get new map/cables,with a remap a dealer can overwrite it when in for servicing, also a reply to other posts the mpg is correct is as doubters say they only ever overfuel you woyuld expect the mpg to read lower not higher so how does that work?
