Have your indicators started working irratically or intermitently? If so check the hazard warning light switch.

Does it cut out after a short period of time/ work irratically or just once?

Both problems will almost certainly be caused by the hazard warning light relay which is (un)conveniently located inside the hazard warning light switch. The part number is 1MO941509B costs around £32 to replace and looks like this -

THE GUIDE:

The following guide is the method which I used to swap and install a new one. Follow at your own risk - I accept no responsibility for any damage caused. If you follow this guide correctly and take care it will be a breeze. :)

THE TOOLS NEEDED:

213287816_o.jpg

- metal spatula/kitchen knife - must have a bit of flex in it
- T20 torx bit - essential that either use wrench and socket extension or torx screwdriver
- Seat sound system 'aura' removal tool or my improvised collar stiffeners - used the AA battery as scale they should be that long but not as wide as battery - if you have an old store card or credit card cut that up and use that
- long allen key this is a must or very similar tool will be used for 'hooking' the switch out only

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1.The start (ideally!)
213287335_o.jpg

2. First of all pry out dummy button with knife/spatula taking care not damage surrounding areas.
3. Next put the stereo removal tool totally straight in both areas arrowed. once in correctly you should sense a click that you have released something. now gently jiggle unit from side to side and it should start to come out but do not remove it fully.
213314406_o.jpg

4. with the stereo half hanging out you should see two screws that need a T20 torx bit to be removed. to save losing them you can put all screws in the area next to gear stick
213311593_o.jpg

213287551_o.jpg

5. next with same torx bit remove the screw inside the flip down ashtray.
213311640_o.jpg

6. Once you have disconnected the ciggy lighter, remove the last two screws...
213311678_o.jpg

7. Now gently pull away the bottom half of panel first making sure the stereo unit is still half way out.

8. Now with great care, as there are little clips behind it, remove the top part of panel as shown
213287728_o.jpg

9. It should now look like this
213287782_o.jpg

10. This is the tricky bit take your time!! - insert the allen key so that it can hook out the rear windscreen heater switch- make sure you pay attention to the way the allen key facing. Make sure the stereo and panel are not pulled out completely! again take your time and use a gentle pull!
213287367_o.jpg

11. Once that has popped out the hazard relay switch will be exactly the same, carefully manouevre the allen key in the gap and pop it out in same fashion.
213287399_o.jpg

12. Now carefully separate the clip arrowed (that is on both sides) with the knife and swap part over!

job done! now test it and use opportunity to check that all blinkers are working! refit in exact of reversal making sure you reconnect the ciggy lighter!

A very well-written and detailed guide.

In my Leon Cupra 2001 the cupholder and switch have no fascia in between so it's a lot easier. For anyone wondering how much easier, here we have it...

Tools required:

1 small flat head screwdriver
1 average finger

Step 1:

Open cupholder and pull off the hazard switch fascia. Comes off easily with a quick tug (fnar fnar!)

Lever the switch out using the screwdriver.

I've broken the side of the old switch (no problem) but also nicked the side of the heated rear window switch slightly. If you take a bit more time and don't lever against the switch, all should be just fine.

And that's it!

Great guide (the first one), worked a treat for me, many thanks. I got the part from the local Seat dealer for £23.

Jus got the same problem as above. Checked with gfs, eurocarparts and seat dealer but none of them seem to stock this relay. Any ideas where to get it from?
Thank's...

The part is only available from SEAT (part number 1MO941509B) or you can buy a VW one intended for mark IV Golfs/Boras however SEAT dealers probably won't tell you that!

I seriously doubt any auto parts supplier will sell one due to it being a specialist part.
If you are still stuck try getting it delivered from one of the dealers on here.

Be careful when removing it too. It's very easy to damage the surrounding areas when levering it out- as mentioned in the second guide.

Cheers mate, I'll call my local seat or vw dealer again tomorrow and hopefully I'll get this part...

Found one at eurocarparts for Golf but the switch is different. Do you think the relay itself will fit for my AGN toledo??

Your'e a life saver. Got a second hand one from a VW scrappers near me though the Old bloke was adamant that a MkiV wouldn't fit. Cost me a tenner and took 5 mins to fit and it all works fantastically. No need to drive like a BMW driver anymore. Thanks again. The cover is a different shape but the switch is the same for us.

15 mins and done. If you have problems with finding a switch for seat get one for golf MkIV and replace the fascia as I did.
16 quid and available in every eurocarparts. Here's the PN: 462440120.

I can confirm that the golf hazard switch works as I have fitted it to mine.

Does anyone have the original pictures for this? My car has the facia bits between the swtich and the cup holder.

Thanks

I used the second guide thanks a lot a great help. I am not car minded in the slightest and it literally took 5 minutes just using a butter knife. I used the Golf part, which was £14 from GSF (1J0953235J01C).

Quick Tip: To prize out the relay I put the butter knife up vertically in the gap between the plastic surround and the relay itself and it popped out straight away, this prevented any damage to the surrounds or other controls. Hope this helps somebody.

Hi,

My indicators started working irratically. right hand side working fine. The left side is ok except for the front indicator light. I replaced the bulb, but light is still not working (old bulb seemed ok). checked the hazard warning lights. Bulb still not working but "ticking" at normal rate. Front left might work normally once the car has been driven for a bit. Any suggestion? Would think a loose connection near the bulb as the indicator on the side of the car is working fine. Help

Just had this switch out on the wifes Leon. The indicators had stopped working but the problem was not a faulty relay. The hazard switch had always been sticky since we had the car. Turns out the spring clips on the side of the switch were stopping the switch releasing properly. Remove spring clips all working. Nice cheap fix :)

I've just fixed mine (I think-fingers crossed) with a three pound Mk4 golf relay- good old ebay!
Good guide and notes above, thanks

Great guide, (even though the pictures didn't load). Just replaced my hazard relay and have cured the intermittent (and more recently) not-working-at-all indicators. The collar stiffeners is a great shout (I doubled up, so 4 in total) and this worked a treat.

Thanks again.

P.S. I was charged £22.79 +VAT (£27.35) from a local SEAT dealer in Wimbledon for the part (1MO 941 509 B NNF)

Hi not sure if this is any help, been to g s f today and picked up a hazard light switch for a golf 4 & bora, got told the leon part wasn't listed. The item I was sold is 93434j according to the invoice, I will get my mate to take a look at fitting it for me as I'm currently off work with a broken hand (I have posted a thread elsewhere on this forum), hopefully this will fit, I'll let people know how I get on, thanks 20vroper.
