Power Steering Warning Light - Help !!! (I know I'm not the first)

Hi all,

I am new here, apologies for my lack of introduction but I'm at my witts end here. I've been brought to this page after google found one with a similar problem

Thread 'Power Steering Warning Light - Help !!! 333459, cannot post link as not made 15 posts.

I'm hoping I can tap in to some of your experiences and expert knowledge on this one. Here's what's happened to me far....

*Yellow PAS fault light came on days before MOT was scheduled
* Local garage passes MOT and advises fault was due to a faulty fuse, total cost for MOT and fault fix £125. Paid on debit card
* fault comes back on, immediately on drive home. After more tests with computer they advise Angle Sensor is at fault and needs to be replaced, total cost £240, paid on credit card. At this time I also asked them to check the PAS fluid for any leaks and advised this is definitely not the cause and all is ok.
* On drive home fault comes back on, immediately returned to the garage who look at it again for about half an hour and advise the issue should now be sorted, no extra charge.
* less than a week later, the fault is back on a drive to work

If you can share any experiences or advice on this, it would be greatly appreciated. I see some think it is battery related? Needless to say I have opened up a dispute on my credit card for the second payment, no doubt nothing will come of it.

Thanks,

Have you had the car read for what the exact error code is?

A dying battery and cold weather can sometimes throw a error light when initially starting the car, however, usually clears itself after turning the engine off and restarting.

Actually strangely enough, it isn't usually there when I first start the car...but tends to come on after maybe 5-10 minutes of driving.

The car was read and the error was deemed to be the Angle Sensor, this has since been replaced and the fault is still there.

Well the actual Angle Sensor itself has been replaced, so I guess the wiring is a good shout. I'm thinking it may also be worth replacing it's battery?

Bad news :-( Fault still present at differing times after the angle sensor has been replaced and the garage have admitted they're unable to fix the problem. Passed on to some electrics specialists now and they have indicated it might be the hydralic pump, but still looking. Ouch. I can't imagine this is going to be cheap :-(

Wiring had been checked and all ok there. Unfortunately we're looking at the pump being replaced. Be interesting to see how much we're looking at for this.

Have you changed your battery??

I got all sorts of odd codes on my Ibiza, but after changing the battery they all went away.
If you're still running the original battery then changing it out is a good shout.

Not yet . PAS has been iffy for a week now . Its fine on a morning ,drive 12 mile ,restart and the faults back .The faults never came on while driving but has disappeared twice while driving .Once I managed 2 restarts after a 12 mile drive with no fault but 12 mile later fault returned on restart .
Battery tested on 2 drop testers ,both said replace but mechanics thought battery was not the problem.Voltage before startup today was 12.17v ,idle voltage 14.5v .
A snapped wire was giving 17911 code ,thats been repaired ,no more code !
I don,t have access to Vagcom but found a site selling clones for £50 ,are they any good ?
http://vag-tool.co.uk/index.php/pro...ti-language-german-franch-italian-polish.html

PAS fluid was topped up .
After an overnight charge of battery the fault never appears ,but does on restart .Pump connections checked for corrosion ,sprayed with contact cleaner .
If its the battery ,does the PAS take more out of it than actually starting the car ,a 1.4 tdi ,which might explain why a overnight charge helps .

Don't get a clone get an original or just get a KKL VCDS Cable on eBay for a few pounds and use VCDS-Lite to read and clear codes!

Sounds like your battery hasn't got enough amperage to turn the engine and power everything else. The power steering pump is electronic and a drop in power (usually when you start the engine) will register a fault. I used to have this issue, but a new Exide 096 battery solved it.

Is your power steering still actually functioning?

My Power steering failed 2 days before my wedding / honeymoon and was straight back to work after the 4wk holiday so needed the car, so whilst I was away I had the pump/controller (all one unit) replaced for ~£750 iirc

In hindsight I reckon it was probably the wiring into the pump unit as there have (as you say) been other reports of this. Bear in mind mine failed totally!

As for the original mechanics, I hope they refunded you at least part of the money they charged, considering they diagnosed it incorrectly.

PAS no longer works when warning light is on . It isn,t too hard without PAS except parking etc but I`m worried about putting too much strain on the steering column .
Forgot to mention earlier ,a friend of a friend used a Snapon scanner (free of charge )and got 01309 no communication .

But after reading this ,http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/01309 ,I think he only scanned the steering part .

Borrowed an ancient laptop that had VCDS lite ,the basic free version and found these faults .Can,t copy n paste results as laptop couldn,t handle a USB drive ,here goes ,

COMMON
08 AUTO HVAC
00819 HIGH PRESSURE SENSOR (G65)
07-00 SIGNAL TOO LOW
00819 SHAREWARE VERSION
31-10 PLEASE REGISTER/ACTIVATE

09 CENT ELEC
01309 POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE (J500)
49 -00 NO COMMUNICATION

17 INSTRUMENTS
01309 POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE (J500)

49 - 00 NO COMMUNICATION

19 CAN GATEWAY
01309 POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE (J500)
49 - 00 NO COMMUNICATION

01309 SHOWED IN ELECTRONICS 1 IN 09 , 17 , 19

Are these results pointing to (hopefully ) the pump itself ?

Car is now back on the road .
After considering a recon pump I found a guaranteed working used pump for £45 .All fitted ,fresh fluid and it seems fine ,no PAS light on dash and steering feels lighter .
I did a full scan and got 1 new code - 44 00816 power steering sensor (G250)
37-10 Faulty Intermittent

The existing codes relating to J500 all cleared as did the new code .

Could this code be from having the sensor unplugged from pump and rack at certain times I`ve been trying to fix the problem ?
I`ve cleared codes and will scan later to see if that code returns .

Thanks for all advice /info given , its helped a lot .Cheers .

newby looking for help

looking for some info here, I have an Ibiza 1.2 fr ( Model 6J , 2012 ) with a power steering fault. the vcds which I have just purchased ( so still learning ). is showing 00816 power steering sensor (g250 )
30-00 open or short to plus.

I have done a bit of research and the funny thing is that the model I have should not have the g250 sensor it should have the g85 sensor, I have checked the pump , it has 3 sockets but only 2 of them in use, I have checked the steering rack there is nowhere for the g250 sensor to fit ( blank casting).

I had a guy come round about a month ago with a snap-on diagnostics but his software only went up to 2011, he tried resetting stuff but no luck.

I think because his software was not for my year he may have set the pump sensor to look for the g250 instead of the signal from the g85.

what I am looking for is assistance switching from the g250 and returning to the g85 sensor using VCDS. and remember I am new at this.
