Had something similar when my drivers door stayed unlocked,could lock it using the key manually no problem,i stuck some WD40 using the straw into the keyhole itself and locked unlocked a few times and something freed up. Mechanism still sounds a bit noisy on the drivers side but has worked again for months.

It showed up on vcds as a faulty drivers door central locking mechanism.

Faulty microswitches in door locks is a common theme across the VAG range. Mk4 Golf and B6 Passat is notorious for the same thing! New lock should sort it.
