I have been driving my work car for several weeks and this has savage AC.

I use the Leon at weekends and I felt that the AC wasn't as good so I ran some tests.

On full AC after 3 minutes I am reading 8 celcius out of the centre vent.

On my son's Leon we show 7.25 celcius under the same conditions of max AC and on my wife's old Corsa we got 6.5 celcius under the same conditions.

Has anyone else looked at the AC and at what point would you get it topped up.

The local steeler does a full AC service for 75 quid and nothing less and the local Halfrauds will do a top up for 50 quid.

Has anyone done a home top up using a shake can from Fleabay or similar?

I used an ordinary fridge thermometer and sat it in the centre vent on full blow and air recycle.

I haven't tested mine with a thermometer yet, but it is pretty underwhelming compared to other cars I've had.

I would imagine the main stealer and Halfrauds do the same as Kwik Fit and have some strategically shaved and untrained ape hook it up to a machine. You're better off going to an independent specialist, you might pay a little bit more, but it's well worth it.

Find a reputable non franchised garage and get them to regas the air con. Make sure they know correct volume required to fill.

Came across this on the OBDeleven forum, if it helps

More cold in the cooler
With this mod 30% more cold in the climate control is achieved. (Thanks to Xagico)
1 - Module 08 - Electronic air conditioning / heating
2 - Extended Coding (Text)
3 - Temperature Adjustment
4 - Change value: Set colder func.refrig

Would presume however that this mod is for Climate Control fitted vehicles only.

There's always an assumption that regassing a/c will fix any issues, in reality there are numerous other reasons for reduced output.

Your vent output temps aren't bad IMO, 5-7 degrees is about right, that's usually measured a couple of inches into the vent, a/c max and at least 10 minutes with the engine at reasonable rpm (typically 1800 rpm).

Try the easy stuff first. Car Mode> a/c not set to Econ. Recirc fan On to get max cooling and Make sure your's is operating in High mode:
-Push Setup button, [lower half of the centre rotary a/c control, lower dash panel],
-on the RHS of the touch screen check the a/c mode icon (1 wiggly line = Low, 2 = Med etc)
-press to open options and select High.

This doesn't increase the max output, but should make the a/c try to reach the target temp more aggressively.
There's also a VCDS setting (Hot Countries)to increase performance.

Update...Any of the above any use?

I tested it under those conditions but only with the engine on a few minutes. It still is low to get cold compared with our 11 plate Corsa 1.4 petrol but it does tend to sit in the garage and only get used every second or third week. The Corsa has never had any gas or had an air con service.

It shall be back to almost weekly use in August when I am out of contract and looking for work so I will let you know.

My feeling is that it has lost some refrigerant whilst not being used regularly and we have the 16 plate 184 FR to compare it to as my son lives only 1 mile away. His is used daily and gets cold almost instantly.
