Your not alone

Is it your main bearings gone?

Im in the process of having my bottem end rebuilt as it squashed 2 lots of big end shells on cyclinder 4

Gives you a excuse to forge the rods and get the crank reground , you know then it will take anything you throw at it

I was told the rattle was termjnal and i requested my cam chain to be checked and it turned out to be that! But after that they then heard the bottom end knock which if you unplug your coil packs 1 by 1 and rev it the noise will go as it will be on the power stroke

Get the chain checked first mate as it will be the cheapest option

Hi mate sorry to bump an old thread but did you ever resolve this? As I’ve developed a rattle and changed the cam chain + tensioner plus I’ve installed a new pick up pipe and balance shaft freewheel and still don’t know. Same boat as you, spending money for different places to say it’s different things

Does it rattle on light part throttle in higher rpm?

There is also a fuel line that rattles on the bulk head aswell you can adjust these in the engine bay but this is usually on idle

So if I put light throttle down and let off around 2.2k rpm it is slightly noisier. I did think it could be N80 valve but it’s definitely coming from under the car. Sump area or surrounding

I only ask as that's what mine did and it was my big end bearings

Has the car ever been run low on oil?

The garages logic behind was when your accelerating the power would force the rod down onto the bearing but when on light throttle with no load on the engine it could move more freely and that's when you'd hear the knock

Could be early signs but always worth getting a opinion from a garage as if it is the dreaded then at least it can be fixed from the bottom without removing the engine and stripping it

So funnily enough I do think it’s this. The noise has been happening for a while but I drive the car like a priest, also never have it over 3k rpm. Did drop the sump and absolutely no issues there or in the oil filter, however brother in law and me just pulled each coil out one by one, Coil 1, noise still there, pulled coil 2, revved the car and noise has completely gone, put coil 2 back in, noise returns. Car has been parked up so won’t touch it. If you don’t mind me asking how much was it to do all in? Audi quoted me £198 just for the shells, that’s without everything else as they’d want to use new balance shaft unit bolts and bottom end bracket bolts

Was around 6 years ago when I did mine mate

I ended up rebuilding the engine around 4 months later as the crank was damaged from the bearings , I'd remove the crank and get it checked before ordering anything as you may have to rebuild or replace the engine if that works out cheaper

My forged engine cost me 1800 all in back then but that was with a family member who charged me 500 all in for the removal , rebuild and refit of the engine.

I got all my parts from TSR performance and the customer service was 110% so I'd highly recommend them for any engine component's

I've got a build thread from years back

Lees forged mk2 cupra have a mooch through that I think every common mk2 problem that's in existence I had dealt with it with that car, bloody miss that thing

Well this is what I’m praying is that the crank isn’t damaged. It’s booked in next week to have it looked at a VAG specialist so he’s told me to order the shells in anyway and if the crank is fine to replace it but he did say the fact the sump and oil filter was clean is a good sign but we shall see. Engine rebuilds now are around £2.5-£3k so I’d probably break the car for parts as I don’t have that sort of money. Unfortunately bought the car off a best friend 6 months ago and had nothing but problems with it so even if it can be sorted I’d be selling it due to the fact it’s had so much money spent on it in that time

I just went through this and it’s a quality build, I’ll get my crank checked as if it is damaged I’ll not be installing the new shells, I’ll break it for parts and just have to take the loss really. Slightly heartbreaking if it is as I’ve worked a lot on the car myself doing the cam chain + tensioner and balance shaft delete plus oil pick up and it only just had the cambelt and waterpump done on July 3rd so this week

Ahh man I hope its an easy fix

I recon a second hand engine would be cheaper , I had a second mk2 cupra not too long ago and that was on 128k and drove miles better than my forged one but it was stock.

If you do decide its not worth the money to spend on it.......let me know......I fancy a project car lol

Funnily enough mate mine isn’t a Seat Leon 😂 I’ve had a seat Leon but mine is an Audi TTS, so it’s Quattro, BUT… not one person even bothered replying on the Audi forums regarding it and I know they use these engines in the K1’s as I’ve had one previously so thought I’d come here as I’ve been on this forum previously and people just seem a lot more forward in helping out (like you have now) literal blood, sweat and tears have gone into the car. I should’ve used my head when purchasing it as my best friend owned it for 18 months and absolutely ragged it everywhere, so the reality is I shouldn’t have bought it, worst still is I sold my Leon to fund it as I wanted the Quattro 😂 but I’ll keep you updated with it pal. Appreciate the replies more than you know

and also yeah I’ve looked for recon engines, a CDL one popped up with 50k for £1800 so I might be tempted to get a loan and go for it as I could pull all the brand new bits my engine has got and swap it over but time will tell

Aha fair play! I do like the tts but your right everyone on the seat forum is more helping but your pal shouldn't have sold you a car he knew was going to be a lemon that should have been that far away it wasn't going to come back lol I wish I bought a mk3 leon cupra instead of the golf r , the 4wd isn't all its cracked up to be I miss fighting the steering wheel for traction like my old Leon's.

Keep us posted on where you end up with it mate I hope its not too much of a lemon for you pal

Yeah I’m the same. Miss the loss of traction in the Leon 😂 that was stage 2 and was an animal on the road, the TTS is refined in the fact it does not wheel spin even in the wet, mate I’ve had nothing but problems with the car, doesn’t help me drove it around with the thermostat ****** for 18 months and didn’t tell me until the day I bought it. I will mate, it’s going in next week so will reply and keep you updated! Praying it’s just the shells. Thanks pal really appreciate it
