Squeeky Engine

Good Morning,

Over the last two days ive gained a squeak in the engine bay, which is only present with rpm is low (sub 800). Engine is the BKD 2.0 tdi bkd.

I suspect its something that is on the front belt - with the alternator but not been able to narrow down much more from there. The noise doesn't increase with acceleration or rpm, so i dont believe it is a loose belt.

Can someone tell me what else lives on the same belt as the alternator?

Can see this becoming an expensive fix!

not AU-fait with this engine but pound to a penny it's the belt or more likely the tensioner/idler pulley which if it's like most others can be removed lubed and reused if it doesn't squarck for too long also godd chance to really check the belt for cracks/old age

Cheers, think the belt is approx £17, so may as well try and change that, more concerned as to how easy it is to get the tensioner out - looks like its easy to unbolt, but a pig to get out with the spaghetti of pipes in front... something for the weekend i think.

Finally had a chance to look and investigate.

Got my dad to start the car while i looked, noticed the alternator pully move on startup.

Tensioner seemed ok.

Used a listening rod (long solid screwdriver) while engine was running and could hear a not so smooth spinning alternator.

Bought a recon and replaced yesterday, and squeek was gone.

Looked at the old one, and as soon as the belt was taken off, the shaft was moving in and out, pully was spinning almost freely.

Wasn't a hard job -access is a bit tight, but doable with a spanner set.

Belt still looked in good nick, plus it was easy to put on once new alternator was on (thin, long arms may have helped) so will look again in a few months to see what state it is in.
