1). disconnect both and tried my old bulbs....radio is fine

2). connected left side only.....radio affected

3). connected right side only....radio affected

Just had a thought, is it acutally drop of radio signal or is it earth static from somewhere...ie - does it do it when tape / CD's are played or just radio?

Where about's are you located?

When these lamps are in operation a continuous arc is produced across the two electrodes which causes the gas/metal combination inside the glass tube to glow and produce light. When the flow of electricity is forced to arc, it sends out an electromagnetic pulse, which is the cause of your interference on your radio.

Radio receivers are very sensitive to this type of interference, and as the lamp is constantly arcing, the interference will probably be heard as a buzzing.

The best advice I can offer is to make sure your lamp ballasts and cables are well away from your aerial coax. Also make sure the coax sleeving is correctly connected as it's there to shield the main signal in the centre and prevent interference. :)

I`ve got one ballast stuck to the water bottle and the other to the side of the battery.

Mine are in very similar positions to yours and I have no troubles. And as far as I know, all components of the audio system, including the radio components, are well away from these areas.

I think it might be something to do with the powered aerial, but I'm just not sure what. The only thing I can think of trying, is ordering the wiring harness to go along with the HID kit. There was one for sale in the For Sale forum here recently, so might be worth checking to see if that's still for sale before ordering though.

Im right in saying its Red to blue and Brown to black for the wiring.

I had the HID's off a mate and he says they were ok but couldnt say if he had notice any chance in the radio

It's down to different brands of HID's, I have 2 x HID kits fitted, one to the Main which doesn't cause any interference and one to the driving lamps which does but only on stations with a fairly weak signal, down to the shielding used on your kit

If you're using a signal booster for the radio, then that would certainly amplify not just the wanted radio signals, but also the interference from the lamp system.

The coax aerial cable goes from the aerial at the rear of the roof, to the back of the radio slot. Checking the outer copper shield is intact in the coax going into the back of the radio could be a start.

Otherwise as dssr says, could be poor shielding on your ballasts.

Can't really think of anything else other than putting ferrite blocks on the back of power cables on radio to absorb unwanted RF? That's probably a long shot though.

I'll have a think!!

Thanks, Any ideas on whats the best way on shielding the ballasts?

You can get plug in ballast shields, I looked into it but the interference is so little only notice it on quiet tracks with a bad signal

I have just bought a set of 6ks from HIDS4U and am also having this issue... doesnt seem to be frequency related as it does it on kiss @ 101mHz and radio 1 @ 99.5mHz....

Obviously not a cheapo kit from ebay, would have thought that the ballasts etc would have been appropriately shielded etc?

Just wondering if anyone has found a solution to this problem?

Cheers
