Wear on front tyres (Leon FR 2.0 TDI with 18" oem)

Hi all,

I have had my Leon FR TDI 2.0 for 9 months now (still absolutely loving it) and I have done 12,000 Miles (A lot of them are motorway). I have 18" Dunlop Sport Maxx tyres on my wheels. Each week I pump up my wheels to the recommended tyre pressures (in the petrol cap 32 front 29 rear).

I have now got about 2mm tread on the middle of both of my front tyres and 4mm on the outside and inside edges. This would point me to over inflation but I am filling the to the recommended PSI (well what it says on the petrol cap). The rears seem to be fine.

I assume this is not right. What do you fill your FR 18" tyres to? It is normally only me for most of my driving then me and the Mrs at the weekend.

Thanks all!

Adam

How often do you replace your tyres? Are they 18's and is that the recommended psi?

Thanks!

if the middle on the tyre is worn more than the outside edges, then yeah i guess that would be over inflated.

just a question. where do u inflate ur tyres? petrol stations?

if so then petrol station pumps are notoriously bad for accuracy.

Yes I do pump them up at petrol stations. I guess that could be the problem.

I do pump them up in the morning before I do any driving (well a very short drive to the petrol station)

Is there any pump you would recommend that I could buy?

Thanks for your replies guys.

i've got a michelin digital pump which i plug into cigarette lighter point and just punch in the selected pressure and it does the rest. I've never had the inside of the tyre wearing more than the outside edges. my pump cost around £40. My brother and dad borrow it when they need to pump up their tyres.
Maybe i should start charging them for the service

I had the same problem with my FR TDI.....when I went to get some new Pirelli P Zeros Rossos I was told to run them at 29 PSI all round.....have had no problems at all!

I'm using 35 front / 32 rear for my 17" Goodyear F1's on a Sport TFSi. 32/29 seems a bit low

For your info my wifes 2007 FR TDI which had/has OE Pirelli P Zeros have been run on 32/29 psi. The front tyres were changed at the 20000 mile service and were still had about 500 to 1000 left in them. I had the rear wheels and original tyres put on the front and the front wheels put on the rear with the new Continental Sport Contact 2 tyres and am now running 32/32 psi.

Hi. on the topic of FR TDI 18" tyre wear, my original front Bridgestones lasted 10k - the rears lasted 15k. I then had a pair of Falken FK452 which managed 10k on the front and now have Khumo Ecsta Ku31 all round (2 to replace Falkens and 2 for the Bridgestones) - 2 of of these appear half worn after ~4k on the front and the other 2 are the same after 8.5k on the back.

All in I'm on tyres 7,8,9 & 10 after only 23.5k which are half worn & if I swap front to rear could last another 8k or so. Failing that I'll be looking at 2 more for the front in around 4k.

I am genuinely puzzled by the rate of wear especially the rears:confused:

I've read on here of people getting 20+k from a set of fronts.

I always use ESP, also had wheel alignment carried out when the Khumos went on and frequently check pressures. The tyres wore out evenly and were close to illeagal before being changed. I do mainly mixed driving some of which involves commutting with passengers (sensible driving). I do like a blast on the odd fast and twisty B road which does work the tyres but I tend not to nail it in low gears to limit tyre wear. I do occasionally see the ESP light during driving though.

After 14 years driving various cars, a bit of me thinks this is a bit much but on the otherhand it is a high torque engine and this is the heaviest car I've owned which must increase wear through the corners. It is also the first with independant rear suspension.

What is everyone else getting from theirs? Is this normal or excessive?

Thoughts/suggestions most welcome!

Seems odd, my dads golf gttdi - one set over 20k for fronts rear still good. I ran 36 / 34 in my ibiza fr tdi, tyre wear really good, especially how hard it got driven, Cant comment on leon yet still too new to tell, BUt that wear seems odd, edges of tyres yes, centre no.

Sure you werent running 29 Bar :p

I had the same problem with my fronts as well. middles went.
However this was resolved when the next set were fitted. Same on both of my FR's

got about 14-15K out of them.

got 30k out of the rears.

In my alfa i was lucky to get 9k out of a set of fronts.

It has a lot to do with driving styles and tyre compound

I have just got around 26k off of the fronts - they were Micheln Exalto (OEM) and the rears are still going strong. Mostly do motorway miles but the in between bits are not done at granny speeds..........swapped the fronts to Falken FK 452's grip seems alot better but doubt the wear will mirror the michelins!

The problem is getting the right balance for tyres. In general, the more grip the faster they wear. This is mainly due to the softer compound of the grippier tyre. My front tyres tend to only last 12-15k but the rears are hardly worn I'm this period. My left tyres also take a beating as I do lots of roundabouts, so they wear a little quicker.
