Also can you still get updated maps for these things, and do they come with European maps as standard or just UK?
Yes you can, the I've seen a 2011 version of the CD. However, it's not cheap (>£100) and because it's a CD rather than a DVD it'll only be UK. Europe is available, but it'll be another CD (and another £100...)
Just had a look at eBay.de has loads more to choose from. If I use a german cd, I wonder if the spoken instructions will be in German? Not a massive issue as I speak a fair bit of German, but would probably be annoying after a while.
Just discovered that the discs are multilingual. Nice. Now to find and an Alps and MRE for a reasonable cost.

The discs might be multilingual, but I don't think the unit is. I managed to get a European disc to try out (A map of some obscure city that I didn't recognise), and it didn't work. Admittedly it could have been the disc at fault, but it definitely wasn't happy.
Of course, if you do find a UK map that works I would appreciate the Ebay item number.

Looks like the discs are multi lingual. Result. I'll be continent bound for 10 months of the year, might be up for selling you the original UK disc thats in the unit. No idea how old it is, but I'll have a look when I pick up the car on Thursday.

OK, a few pics...
First, the radio keys and where they fit, for those who haven't yet looked at removing the unit. Ebay special, set of four for a couple of quid. I've actually found I only need two two remove my unit, I'm sure it did need all four at some point.
Then the pinout;
(Sorry it's a bit blurry, the flash just made everything flare up and I can't figure out how to decrease the exposure without the flash)
Now the important picture, the back;
The lead I bought for the audio in is the connector to the right, with heat shrinked insulation leading to a pink wire (live), red and black (audio). That's at the top of the picture. The red and black go off into a little white box, which is my home made pre-amp. The pink comes back on to the wiring loom and is spliced into a live wire (in this case it's actually the CD changer 12 volts which was the easiest to get to).
The wire sticking out of the connectors is the gala wire, a blue and white wire that now goes nowhere. The other end is terminated with a bit of insulation tape so it doesn't short on the casing.
And lastly, the all-important menu option;
As you can see, the TV/VIDEO option is available.

Slimy, if you're still tinkering with this any chance to put up a picture of the back with the GPS antenna plug visible (even possibly disconnected)? I've been having a problem with GPS signal reception, so trying to figure out why that is.
Any idea how to check if the GPS antenna is working as it should (i.e. measurement references of some sort)?

Yeah, the aerial connector is a standard UHF connector and is in the far corner.
There's plenty of space just behind the climate control panel, a bit more down behind the ashtray and behind the glovebox. It's also pretty easy to route wires from the glovebox to the head unit. You should be able to get a GPS receiver in any of those sections.
The fourth picture down on the original pics shows my attempt at a preamp enclosure, it's about three inches wide by 2 inches deep, and it sits fine just below the head unit.

You're right. I took out the head unit today (the keys arrived today). I measured the resistance across the connector -- I got something around 480 Ohm, which is most likely not what it should be.
Slimy, if you have the time, could you please measure the resistance across the GPS antenna connector? It would be good to know I am correct on my assumption.
Now the question is whether I try to pry out the aerial and see if the problem is there, or just spend 10 quid on a new GPS antenna from eBay. I had a look under the headlining to see how I might get the aerial out and I can see the nut that has to be undone. I'll likely manage to get the aerial out, but is it worth it?
If there is a break somewhere in the cable between the head unit and the aerial, I won't be able to re-wire it. Also, it's unlikely that I'll be able to repair the aerial, so it would have to be a replacement from SEAT anyway, if I wanted to stay with the original one (likely to cost a fair few bob as well). Sorry dvance, didn't see your post about the impedance. I don't think that's going to help you much though, with it being amplified I doubt it's simply a bog standard wire.
Then again, maybe it's only the radio that's amplified rather than the GPS? I'm not sure. As for the metal box, that doesn't look familiar at all!! I can't even imagine where it could sit!

Yeah, take your time with the impedance. It's supposed to be an active antenna I believe (for the GPS as well) but it still could give some information.

I just don't get any satellites found or connected to. So it just tells me that it cannot determine my geographical location at the time. I do get a location displayed on the map, but it's quite old (think 4-5 months back when I went down to Dunbar).
I guess also the inertia (or whatever it's called) nav system kinda works, as it changes the position a bit as I drive, but never get satellites connected.
