Results from last weekend:
Nice day, stayed almost dry with only a couple spots of rain, 130+ cars entered and due to efficiency of liverpool MC we got 2 practice and 4 timed runs, well done chaps

Good entry in 3b including a quick elise that was double driven - well that will be hard to beat for a start. Anyhow, good series of runs getting progressively faster and it was clear before the last run that the elise drivers were going to be 1/2 and me 3rd, being well ahead of the other cars (205's, fiesta, FTO etc). Not the fastest day at Aintree and many people were down on the PB's - I was half a second away and 4 mph down on speedtrap time.
Beat the same elise last year by a second in the wet but no chance in the dry, they were a good 1.5 secs clear. Having 2 drivers ahead of me in the same car has really hit my championship points hard - dont think its recoverable actually as its impossible to make up given the scoring system - oh well.

Next one Curborough 15th June where (thankfully) there will be no Elises as Nottingham MC put them in their own class.

Right - a few changes for Curborough - binned the airbox as I think its restrictive, taking the edge off things a bit, so now back to this:
Direct air feed from the front, DFV filter back on, sod the noise.
Bit of suspension geometry tweeking to be done tomorrow, bit more negative camber on the front and toe check.

Had a couple days off work so have been playing with car. Sent the excellent chaps at BMTR in Birmingham some photos of my tyres after the last event to see what they thought - you can tell from the wear patterns and where rubber is stuck to the tyre how its working. Anyhow, the advice was to reduce camber and put more air pressure in. So did this, took 3/4 degree camber off both sides to stand the tyres up more and reset toe to dead ahead.
Have been messing with air intake as above and also have fitted some alloy underdrive pullies to slow alternator and waterpump down. Have taken the piss with my alternator having it go to over 24,000 rpm when 16-18,000 is more the norm. Took it off to check it over and the bearings were goosed. So new (exchange) alternator fitted. Slower water pump will stop cavitation also and better cooling.
So with all this done, went to my local rolling road (Mikeanics and Congleton) for a mapping session. Picked it up this evening and had some great results waiting for me. Check this out - 248hp @ 7830 and 179ft lb @ 6715. And you can feel the difference over previous 232hp. This corresponds to a BMEP of 205.5 psi, well good.

great day out - fantastic weather - good event run by nottingham sports car club

A cracking day was had again at Aintree and nice to see Saul who popped along for a scan at the proceedings.
As always running in 3b with a stack of other cars; pug 205 lad, tvr vixen, saxo vts, xr2, saab 99, double driven elise, mitsi fto.
Dry throughout day but temperature went up and down quite a bit with cloud cover. Very windy with everyone complaining about lack of top speed down the straight due to a direct headwind. And mad swifts dive bombing people as they went over the finish line - loony birds.
Main competition was the double driven elise - they should be in a different class (as they are in many other championships) and having it double driven so each of drivers gets a go on hot tires is a double advantage.
Previous PB was 52.48 and last time at aintree in April 52.91.
P1 - 2.65, 54.20. Felt good. Up 6 clicks on front dampers and up 3 on rears.
P2 - 2.64, 53.73. Ok
T1 - 2.67, 52.60 (115mph over line). Bit between teeth and went for it. Good run.
Lunch.
T2 - 2.60, 52.77 (116). Tires had cooled off a bit over lunch and bit more slippy.
T3 - 2.58, 52.80 (117). Trying too hard.
We also got a fourth timed run that would not count towards the official results so i replaced my slicks with my Toyo R888's that had not been used all day and went only 0.5 secs slower than the last run - so they are damn good tyres ! my car is not set up to run them either so they could be as good as slicks with some setup - shows how far trackday tyres have come. Latest setup was definately better than previous and more consistent.
So this left me in 3rd place behind double driven elise - 50.46 and 51.54. 3rd place trophy.
Happy as I would not have caught the elise today, I beat my last time here in April but was just short of my PB time - put up last year when I was chasing a car just ahead in the times so probably had that little bit more incentive
Because of wind, could not tell if airbox mods would have upped the top speed - experienced formula ford chaps were saying they were 7-9mph down on usual speeds so if its 7mph, back to where it should be at 122/123 pre airbox. And without the wind, would have beaten PB.
next one is the big event - Loton park nr. Shrewsbury, Sat and Sun 26/27th July.

Loton Park double header weekend 26/27th July 2008.
What a cracking weekend - co-promoted by Liverpool MC and Hagley and District Light Car Club. For details of Loton park see here:

Took Fri off work to leisurely pack up the car and get down to Shrewsbury. Decided to use some alternative transport this time instead of a trailer and I have to say it was fantastic ! so easy to use, one man loading with a remote control winch. I will never use a trailer again.
Got down there about 5pm, unloaded, stuck the tent up and walked the course with a tinnie in hand - fantastic weather and sat at the top of the course watching owls and the sun go down. The course is in a deer park and its a very beautiful spot.
Next morning up early and get ready for battle. Good entry with a very fast Mk1 escort driven by local specialist and lots of Gp4 bits on it (and a brand new set od avon slicks he later lets me know). Usual collection of 205, saxo, tigra, etc. Previous personal best times were 2.61 to 64ft, 25.04 to split and 62.93 to end. Been in discussion with tyre specialists BMTR in Birmingham since last visit and have revised tyre pressures that have given improvements at Aintree and Curborough so hopeful they will here also.
P1 - 10.41, 33.95, 72.52 - no idea whats going on here, timing was wrong, steady run though to start day off
P2 - 2.66, 25.34, 63.85 - bit more push, clearly lots of grip to be had
Lunch
T1 - 2.72, 25.61, 63.94 - screwed it up off the line, flustered for rest of run
T2 - 2.66, 25.28, 63.80 - disappointing, didn't seem to have enough grip, lots of wheelspin everywhere.
Well and truely beaten by the escort who does a 60 something and a new PB for him. Second place behind him.
So went to bed thinking how to go faster - decide to put tyre pressures back to what they were at previous visit.
Next morning quite misty and dewey, thinking it may rain......but this never materializes and its a glorious day once again. Same runners as day before but we are now joined by a second Mk2 escort with a NA cossie, sequential gearbox and lots Gp4 bits.....hot from a stage rally the day before. So bit between teeth with new tyre pressures:
P1 - 2.85, 25.98, 65.03 - nice, more grip seems to be the case
P2 - 2.81, 25.06, 62.79 - oh yes, new PB at top

T1 - 2.65, 24.70, 62.53 - oh that felt fast, more committment everywhere, sh*it myself up good and proper LOL, new PB's split and top
T2 - 2.67, 25.11, 62.93 - ok.

looked at results, Gavin Rogers? that thing is quick, used to look like a pile of s**t a few years ago but looks ain't everything. used to see him 5-6 yrs ago, with his g/f as co-driv, at a rally at snetterton feb/mar running against WRC scoobys, 6R4's etc & still run in top 3, won it one year. used to help in scrutineering, seen him come in for scrut. sat 5pm, go off do a night rally then compete on sunday. also rallied in asphalt championship at millbrook against steve fleck, john price, kynaston etc & still run in top 10.
don't feel too bad about it Rob, thats a top combination
