New Ateca owners sometimes find that they loose the speedometer lights etc. This is a VW safety feature to force the driver to turn the lights on. With DLR it was common that people never turned the lights on when it gets dark. The sensor can be seen at about 5 o'clock on the speedometer.

This video from another VW group car waves a torch at the sensor.

If you have auto lights and have them turned to auto you never have the issue since it will turn the lights on itself so will never carry out reprisals on the driver. Linked to auto lights, German cars it appears turn the lights on early, so setting to "late" improves this. If you give up with auto then you get the dash going out.

The DLR can be turned off, see the OBDELEVEN thread

Not illegal in the UK, but not very safe. Useful to turn off if you need the engine running whilst working on it.
