altea 1.9tdi fuel economy

just completed the first full tank of diesel on my wifes new altea... 200 miles of it was on a low volume traffic and lights run so was expecting good economy..... i was very disapppointed to get an average of 39mpg. i was expecting 45-50mpg

any ideas or comments

When you say "new", do you mean brand new? If so, it won't be broken in for many thousands of miles yet. You can't expect it to achieve its best economy when the engine is tight and the cylinders aren't reaching proper compression yet. Patience!

My Ibiza FR TDI has 14000 on the clock, and it's getting better and better, both in performance and economy. Some people say that these engines continue to improve throughout the first hundred-thousand miles!

yep get some miles stacked onto it and dont granny it, have a look at the running comments in the TDI FAQ
