Hi Guy's,

My partner drove the car on a 180m round trip today and when she got back she noticed an intermittent squeeling noise that sounds like front right of the car. When I had a look under the bonnet noticed some orange "dust" around the front right under the fuel filter and around the area with all the belts.

My dad's in Spain at the moment but thinks its a walter leak of some kind any other suggestions?

might be an optical illusion, but i dont like the angle the belt appears to be leaving the roller...
looks more like a powder spray pattern than water, so if the belt was rubbing or not running true etc..

I think its optical it is straight in the car. I think it might be coolant that has dried hence the powder look?

I think mine is the alternator clutch have a new alternator coming as some other problems I have like intermittent high revs seem to relate to that. Did you have to go through the wheel arch for the aircon pully?

New development today. The Alternator Clutch Pulley fell off today and the inside is completely corroded. Can't get the remnants of the other pulley off so have bought another alternator which is coming tomorrow. I'll get some pics up in a minute.

Any one that has the squeeling noise check out the alternator pulley. As soon as I put the new belt on it the pulley fell off. Ultimately I bought alternator cheap (£84 quid) but if you get there in time you could just change the pulley before it falls off!

How do I check the alternator pulley? I have a similar squealing noise thats intermittent. But only sounds after I've been driving for 15 minutes and also when I come off the gas. Does that sounds similar?

Sounds very similar. If you google alternator clutch pulley and look on youtube there are plenty of videos. Does your car ever have a slightly higher rev when still in traffic?

Thanks. Although is it a bit of a job to get the alternator out? I did take the car to a garage today but as expected no noise when the mechanic drove it! He said it can't be anything serious if its not making the noise all the time. Hmmm

Looks like I can perform that test whilst leaving the alternator insitu and just remove the belt. I'll try it in the next few days. Cheers Jay.

No worries. Do you have any orange powder showing? The belt comes off really easy if you need any help let me know and I'll email you pics of the relevant parts...

Took the car to the garage again. After alot of drives and revving it was clear the noise was coming from the underside of the engine and not the pulley or anywhere near. Anyway its booked in tomorrow for the day for them to give it a good look and try and figure out what on earth it is.

I guess if its lower down it could be the aircon unit as someone had above or the power steering pulley?

Good luck getting it sorted hope its nothing too bad!

Car still with the garage. They've located the noise to be coming from between the gearbox and clutch if I remember correctly. Not great, they're going to have to take the gearbox apart. 8hrs work undertaken tomorrow.

Sounds very painful, were there any signs of poor shifting? Otherwise thats expensive to look for a noise?
