Just got my car tax renewal through and its at £205 for a year!

I though "hang on a minute that can't be right" so called up the DVLA and found out that my leon cupra is in the 2nd highest banding for car tax based on CO2 emmisions! surely that can't be right!?

It really f*cks me off, as I drive a very well maintened car, the option of public transport isn't there for my journey to work as it would take approx 3 hours versus half hour in the car....I'm paying £50 + for one tank of petrol due to massive ammounts of tax! [:@]:censored:

I said to the lady on the phone at the DVLA "so what am I getting out of my £205" and she said "it's your road tax"....so I said "no I mean what does it go towards" and the reply was "the general up keep and maintenance of the roads"

Now not being funny.....but the roads in my town are crappy, and they are spending money on putting in speed cameras...more traffic lights....speed bumps and bus lanes" so......how is any of that helping me and my car driving for my £205!

It makes me so angry! surely somewhere there has been a mistake as its based on the Info seat gave the DVLA when the car was manufactured....so basically the reason why this thread is in the mark one section because I wont to know if its true that a 2001 Leon Cupra 180, emits 202g/km CO2?

because if it doesn' t then we are all paying too much for Road tax...I know it may be about as useful as p*ssing in the wind but sometimes you gotta stand up for things you know!

Don't get me started on the government and its overtaxation and missuse of funds....it makes me so angry I cant speak! For example, the Welsh assembly spent something in the region of £60m on a debating chamber in Cardiff bay. When you consider that a house can be built for just a few thousand and you think about the homeless problem we have in the UK.....its enough to drive me slaughter!

More to the point, the LC is in the same emissions band as the LCR but if you're not convinced, take a look at your MOT certificate as that should give the emissions as tested by your MOT tester.

To make matters worse only a low proportion of road tax actually goes towards maintaining the roads. Not sure of the exact figures but read it somewhere a while back.

You road tax bracket can actually change depending on what options you have on a car. Certain options can increase CO2 emissions which could push it up into the next bracket.

Section 4 of the registration certificate also has these details. I'm not sure if each individual car is tested as it leaves the factory for this figure, but major variations within each trim level are.

Its not just road tax that they bend us over on either though. 72% of what we pay for petrol is tax!!!!

That means that every time we stick £50 into our cars, we are giving the theiving b******s £36!!!

And where does it go? To lazy gobby shisters who are too lazy to work and would rather take a hand out from the government. Incidentally, these are also the same degenrates that drive around without insurance, tax or MOT, have accidents and drive up premiums for those of us with an honest and hard working attitude. Now where did I put that shotgun......

Just found an article from 2005 which reckons about 20% of the funds generated from Road Tax are actually spent on the roads.

Why is that silly, Ska? Of course it's a lie.

Contrary to popular belief, there isn't a department setup to scan OC forums for tax-evaders. Even if there were, they'd have a job locating me personally from an online alias :S

Paranoia much, fella? :)

I paid £120 for 6 months tax. It's bloody clown-shoes.

it would be silly if it were true just because....why take the risk in someone seeing it?

It is unlikely that any government employee would read and do anything about it but....it wouldnt be hard to identify you....trust me ;)

paranoia.....most definately! :)

Please don't buy into the IP logging/tracing thing, Ska :p They'll just resolve it down to a nice proxy at my work place.. then they need to trace it to me out of 4,000 potential users.

And then find out my car is taxed up and fully legit.

I'd more likely refrain from saying such silly things because of the impression it gives off about SCN!

Either way. Taxed. Insured. MOT'd. All good :)

Pay per mile would of been funny, had they of brought that in. Sorry, but what are we doing anyway? 2/3 of every litre of petrol is tax.. if that isn't ALREADY pay per mile, what the hell is?

It's crap!

Penalise the motorist at every turn. The roads just generate revenue. That's all.

That's not the stupidest thing, my LCR is £205 for a year on tax but my brothers Mitsubishi Evo V is only £180 for the year. Now work that one out!

Isnt that something to do with the age of the car? The emissions thing is limited to cars built within the last x number of years....

apparently the banding is on what seat told the DVLA when the car is made (not the individual car ...but the model) I've got an old brochure for the mark one leons and it does say that its a 202g/km and also on my registration document

however......

on the emisions test of my MOT for CO Level it has = -0.01% for both "engine speed" and "natural idle" tests with the pass marks being 0.2 and 0.3 respectively

So surely that means im not chucking out much CO2?

anyone got any ideas on how to interpret these figures? or how to calculate the g/km which is what the 2.02g/km banding is?

so does that mean someone can drive around in some clapped out old 4x4 chucking out tons of bad stuff into the atmosphere for cheaper than our nicely well maintened leons?
