Hello guys, I have been debating with this question in my mind for a while so I would like your expert opinions.

My seat altea has 16" wheel on , In Augusts I need to go to the MOT with my car

I might need to replace 2 or 4 tyres for it to pass so my I wanted to save money and get a kit of wheel and tyres from gumtree or something like that to fit on my car..

currently set up :
Tire Rim Bolt pattern
205/55 R16 7Jx16 ET45 5x112

I want :
225/40 R18 8Jx18 ET38 5x112
225/40 R18 8Jx18 ET38 / 7.5Jx18 ET42 5x112
235/40 R18 8Jx18 ET38 5x112

it is fine To go to MOT and pass ( I dont have suspension yet and Ill make shore that The rims dont stick out and dont use wheel spacers

what do you think?
ps: I come from Portugal and there I had to have it in the Cars log book to be legal

You can fit any size wheel you like, to be legal and pass an MOT they must have the minimum tread depth.

I believe you need to make sure that the tyre tread cannot be seen if you look down from the top of the wing. (If you know what I mean)

The tread shouldn't protrude out from the wheel arches when you look down vertically. If you can see the tread it's not the end of the world, can always roll the arches out a bit to stay legal.

In the back im fine , but in the front it sticks out quite a bit, I might have to fender roller it a bit :S

and maybe changing the tyres to a smaller size

I have et 42 245/35 R 19 wheels currently on I might have to go to 215/35 R 19 so they have a bit of an arch on them ( stretched )

am sure there is a legal limited for "poke" might be wrong but am sure its about 8-10mm? just check it on the DVLA website, found this on another website hope it helps

"Hi I am a MOT Tester for classes 1,2,4,5 and 7 - and currently work for myself testing at other garages MOT's. The legal stand for the MOT in my opinion is if the wheel protrudes from the wheel arch then this falls under the reson for rejection of a projection caused by damage or corrosion - ah damaged bit is the tread surface protruding out of the vehicle. the wheels fouling the vehicle is only a fail if this is found during lock to lock check with the wheels/vehicle NOT jacked up but could be refused for testing if when jacking up we cannot turn the wheels on full lock without fouling the vehicle from a point of unable to carry out a full inspection. I have tested cars with wider wheels than factory and passed them but the wheels cannot foul the vehicle/any part of incl brake hoses and suspension when on full lock - also check that they do not foul the suspension strut - in essance for peace of mind leave as standard. - hope this helps"

thank you so much for your help , they do in fact poke a bit but I think its because of the tyres that are fitted ( 245/35 , if I replace the front ones with 215/35 they will have a slight arch on them and the tread will be pretty much inside the arch of the wheel...

before going to MOT im going to halfords or anyother garage and ask there opinion ( I do not want to buy those tyres yet if I dont have to , they have alot of thread left...

thanks for you help
