Hi guys,

My FR currently has 18" 225 40 Michelin Pilot Exalto's SE2 but need to replace the front two in the next couple of weeks. (They've lasted 20k which I'm not sure if thats good or bad)

I know to replace the Exalto's will be around £160 each fitted

Which tyres do you have or recommend and where from? (I'll be changing the rears in another 10k so doesnt matter if the brand doesn't match for now)

Hi, my FR came with Pirelli P Zero Rosso. Fronts have lasted 18k +, rears still look like new, so i've swopped them round for the time being. Kwikfit are currently the best deal at £116 each inc vat and fitting etc. I was going to choose either the P Zero's or the Continental Sport Contact 3, but my brother in law has just informed me that Continental also make a tyre called Barum, they do a Extra Load tyre in 225/40/18 92Y for £70.50 inc vat + fitting. They do get a good write up in the mags, and at that price it might be worth a try.

I'm about to have a pair of Falken ZE912s fitted later today (same size as yours - 225/40 R18), just under £80 a tyre including fitting from Protyre, so i'll let you know what I think of them. They are replacing some Eagle F1 GSD3s on the front which are almost down to the legal limit now.

I had ZE512's on my last car (Mondeo) which I was disappointed with, then tried FK451s and FK452s which were really good. Have read very positive reviews of the new ZE912s which is why i'm trying them again (plus they are about 15% cheaper than the FK452s and way cheaper than any other name brands I could find).

I've got into the habit of using www.etyres.co.uk they are a few ££ more than Camskill or similar but are still competative AND they come to me and fit them while I'm at work.......saves waiting around for half a day at my local tyre fitter on a Saturday sat next to fat taxi drivers with bad B.O and drinking coffee that tastes worse than the cardboard cup it came in.

Just an Idea

Fronts have lasted 18k +, rears still look like new, so i've swopped them round for the time being.

The general safety advise (Car manufacturers, road safety groups and tyre companies) is against tyre rotation and having the poorer pair of tyres on the rear - in both front, rear and 4wd cars.

The reason is that the back is more likely to skid out if you have the poor tyres there and a skid caused front wheel loss of grip is easier to control and recover than a loss of rear wheel grip.

My 18" FR rears are like new too after 16k, but probably looking to replace the Dunlop Sport Maxx with F1 aysem towards the end of the year at around 18-20k miles.

General advise would state to put the new tyres on the rear but as the rears are so new looking (meaning hard to measure the loss of tread) they may be fine to stay put.

I don't think i would consider putting the low fronts onto the rear given the advise which, to me, seams to sound right.

Rotating the tyres also means you need to fork out twice as much in one lump which isnt always good!

Had mine fitted yesterday afternoon and did a trip to work and back on them today, bit of light rain this morning and they felt very grippy and confident. Also seem to give me a smoother ride than the ones that came off (though perhaps that's because they were getting low). All in all very happy with them so far, time will tell how quickly they wear.

Incidentally one of my fronts had worn a lot quicker than the other (off side was down to 2mm) and the toe on that wheel needed a bit of correction. Is that normal? (might be something to do with all the speed humps I have to drive over around here? I am guessing those ones you can almost drive either side of don't do your wheels/tyres a lot of good)

eagle f1 assy everytime. Once you tried the best the other just wont ever do.

Makes the standard bridgestones and pirellis look **** in comparison.

Ive got them on the wifes S-Line A4 Avant - they came on the car. Seem pretty good very grippy.

Replaced Eagle F1's a few years back with two falkens on my old Mk3 ibiza cupra - Utter utter rubbish verging on dangerous. took them off and bought another set of eagle F1's after about a month.

My FR came with pirrelli p-zero rossos and i replace the fronts with Eagle F1 GDS3 however good that the eagles are i think the pirelli's had a bit better grip in both the dry and wet.

Hmm... were they the ZE-512s by any chance? They were the first Falkens I tried and I they were pretty poor. After that I tried FK451 and FK452s and those were much better (tho more expensive). The ZE-912s I have on now feel excellent, despite the 'ZE' label.

307_TO_LEON_FR, would be interested to know what you think of yours?

Second that for Toyo T1-R's. I got 235/35/19 wrapped on my BBS CK's and cannot fault them. They are a lot better than the OEM Pirelli's.

Both grip in the wet & dry is excellent considering the power going through the front wheels.

Cheers

Agree 100% with the above. Significant improvement in roadholding and longevity over the OEM Pirelli's they replaced.

From a personal viewpoint, Always used F1's in one form or another on my MG's, and in fact still do on the TF. Played with Toyo's once on the F, and whilst they were grippy road-going tyres, were not good on track and wear rates were abysmal.

In the past I had both F1 GDS3 and Toyo T1-R on my Ibiza FR and they both needed replacing around the same time. I dont think there is a huge difference in wear rates between them for normal use.
Currently have T1-R on my Leon, cost just over £60 a tyre fitted, seem to be a great improvement on the OEM Pirelli P7's, which were very worn at just 19,000 miles.

Cant remember it was a good few years ago - i bought them cos i was trying to sell the car. I then decided to keep it for a bit longer so then put the eagles back on.

19k from a set of fronts - if i got that much id be dancing in the streets!! i done the pzeros on the front of the FR in 12,500 miles - and i thought that was quite good. I managed to trash a set of Pzeros on my ibiza in 7k!!
