Engine temp in the cold weather - tdi

OK, so my Cupra tdi during the summer gets to 1/2 way on the temp gauge, and stays there whatever sort of journey I do.

Now the ambient temp has dropped, I have found that the engine temp goes to 1/4 on the gauge, and rarely goes up to 1/2 unless I am ragging it. Now I know that the engine cover normally has a sheet of insulation attached to warm the engine (and keep it quieter), but mine was knackered, so removed it.

Mpg has stayed constant, so thats all good. So whats going on? Is it normal to stay on 1/4 in the winter, or do you think my thermostat isn't working anymore - if it was thermostat I would still expect it to get to 1/2 but just take a long time.

As I say, mpg isn't suffering, and neither is performance. I changed the sensor before the summer, as that had died, so its not that.

I’d say thermostat, I know diesels take longer to warm up especially In winter but it should get to operating temp no matter how you drive just take a bit longer when it’s colder, does the temp go down say if you went on the motorway?

When my went I didn’t really notice that much of a difference with my mpg.

The way I tested my thermostat is I held the coolant hose comingn from the thermostat housing and if it got warm quick then thermostat is stuck open, as what should happen is the hose should remain cool until about 88c and then get hot all of a sudden when the thermostat opens and coolant runs through

Just seems to get to 1/4 and stay there. Does take a long time for the engine to warm up, like 4 miles for it to even start moving from cold

Guess I will have to look at thermostats - is it easy to get to?

If it’s like the 1.8t then no, not easy but easily do able for anyone half decent with a socket set! There will be loads of videos online to show you what to do

I would test the thermostat first however

It could be one of several things:
Thermostat yep but that only reads temp.
Calorstat is the thing that actually lets water In and out of engine, they exist in different types. 88 degres C 85 C...

They have a tendancy of getting stuck with older fluid.

Other thought when you drive with vag com plugged it and check actual enfin temps. In summer my 1,6 tdi at 80 mph hits about 100C and in the winter rarely hits 90C

So all in all the temp of your engine never actually stays at 90C like the temp thing says it goes up and down.
The gauge is there just so you know when your car is warm enough to go for it ;)

Does sound like your stat is stuck open. If you have torque pro and a bluetooth odb2 then torque will show you the real temperature thats feed to the ecu, when warming up it can show 90 (half way on the temperature dial) and the real temp might be as low as 70 degrees. If you have never done it before, you need access from the bottom and the top as the auxillary belt needs removing and the alternator needs to come out to get proper access.
