Camshaft Senor/Crank Sensor Incorrect

Ok folks, having my first headache with the 1.8t and I’ve been told there will be many more....... not really looking forward to it but ah well.

So, I got the car just before Christmas and it drove sweet. Then I started to modify it (cold air intake, 3” downpipe, map) went great for a few days then the engine management light came on. Got it on vagcom and it shown the cam and crank sensor incorrect allocation.

So far I have just replaced the cam sensor (old one was a cheap nasty copy) with a genuine part. The timing is going to get checked and I have a crank sensor on order.

Just wondering if anyone has ever experienced this before?
Apologies if it’s been covered countless times.

Thanks in advance

Normally when the camshaft sensor starts to go you will get an implausible signal error code and when the crankshaft sensor fails the car won't run so I don't think these components are the issue. My guess would be timing or electrical/ecu fault.

Thanks for the reply, timing is getting checked by an independent specialist this month. He’s also checking the ecu and wiring to see if I have gremlin somewhere. Trial and error now. Hopefully it’ll be something simple. But my luck it won’t be.

Just got the car back yesterday from DUBTECH in Ballymoney. Paul is the only guy around the area who will touch the 1.8t engine. Such a shame considering it’s a great engine.
Anyway, he stripped down the car to begin checking the timing and straight off the mark he noticed the cam shaft timing was bang on but the crank was out by at least 2 teeth. This was only because the last mechanic to put a timing belt on the car said “only genuine parts were used” when in fact it was cheap brand of tensioner which failed and lost some of the fluid from the unit. This was only noticed against a new part when we looked at the circlip on the pin and measured a 6mm drop from it to the seal. There’s not supposed to be gap.
Anyway, after getting the new timing kit on and timed up correctly, the feels absolutely on point again.
Rolling road shown 178.1bhp and 172ftlbs standard. Now that’s a healthy engine for 135k.
