Diesel DPF issues

I currently have a 1.4tsi 140bhp. A great engine I have to say but I am looking to replace the car with a 2017 diesel Leon 2.0 as I want DSG and like diesel torque, the 1.4Tsi is not or was not available with DSG. My driving is mixed and sometimes I may not do a longish journey for maybe 200 miles. The question is are the VAG diesel engines fairly resistant to DPF problems?

Thanks Weasley, is the application of the DSG good as I think I read a review that the 1.4si Seat Ateca with DSG was a bit jerky from moving off from a stop?
I have to say the 1.4TSi has plenty of torque too but I would still be interested to hear from anyone with a comment on the Diesel Particulate Filters on 2.0Diesel variations?

The VAG engines are certainly not resistant to DPF problems - but no more so than any other DPF equipped car. My wife had a 2 litre 143 engine in her Ibiza - good mpg and good torque. She never had any problems with it but most of her driving was longer journeys - 40 miles round trip to work and some longer distance journeys as well. I told her that once in a while she should cane the engine - hold onto a gear longer, get some heat in the exhaust to help burn off the soot. I know of a few people with various DPF engines that have had problems - VW also used to state in their brochures that if your driving consists of mainly town driving, then a diesel isn’t suitable. My wife changed her job a while ago which meant More town driving so we got her a 1.4 TSi ACT equipped Ibiza FR. She likes it and it’s not too bad on petrol. Got a bit of poke too so all good.

The older EA189 2.0 143 TDi was never designed for a dpf - it was adapted to run with one - this is why it could be temperamental with short trips.

The later EA288 2.0 150/184 TDi motor was designed from the outset to have a dpf and is far less problematic

I had a 2.0 TDI 150 DSG (2013 model). I would say my use is 60% city, 20% A roads (40-50mph) and 20% motoways (60-70+mph). Did only 8000+ miles over 2 years.

City drives are usually either 3-4 miles (each way) or 10-12 miles (each way), with lots of start stops. I use the car twice and sometimes thrice a week. When I do motorways its usually the airport run, and or somewhere far (2+ hrs drive).

The DPF light never once came on, although you can 'see' and 'hear' the car doing an active regen every once in awhile, and get a shock when you park up, and the engine fan is still running full pelt! and it stinks!

Car only drinks Shell / Esso regular diesel and sometimes Shell's Premium Diesel.

I do like the 'shove' in the back feeling in any gear on this engine, esp 2nd gear...feels like being in a plane on the runway and pilot puts full power...and that feeling of the intial acceleration.

Would I recommend? if you do A roads and motorways yes...if city only, probably a 1.4 ACT or 1.0 TSI may be better.

I now have the 1.0 EcoTSI Ibiza DSG, it's slightly more economical on a city run, judging from the TC, but on highways @ 70mph + forget it, the 2.0TDI will do 70mph with 57-62 mpg instant read out, whereas the 1.0 (mind you the official figures are identical (53 city, 64 combined, 72 highway) but doesn't tell you the full story) does the same 70mph, only showing 47-52 mpg instant read out.

My once a week Sunday AM city run from east London to West London, 13 miles. the 2.0 TDI would get approx 46-48 mpg (best ever 52mpg) The 1.0 EcoTSI would get 49-52mpg (best ever 58 mpg)for the trip all things being equal. Same route, same time every Sunday @ 845 with little traffic. Likewise my trip to Stansted from mine 6am...2.0TDI returned 57mpg, 1.0TSI 'only' 47mpg.

We have a 1.6 tdi here and I would say 99% of our driving is around town! The wife goes to and from work around 10 miles each way we average about 9k a year

we got the car with 6k on the clock and its now showing just under 30k

Never had the dpf light on and very rarely get to do a run out these days!

MPG is low 50's around town

A lot of people warned me about getting one with our type of driving but I like diesels! we had a 1.2 tsi ibiza before this and it felt weak!

Spoke too soon!!

DPF light came on today

Just a couple of failed DPF regens due to very small runs recently and not being able to complete a dpf regen!

when I say small runs I am talking 1 - 2 miles max and not even getting the car up to temp!

Just took it down a 40 road and it all cleared within 10 mins

With our normal day to day driving its never a problem as the regen always completes

This is why we got rid of my wife's Ibiza143 TDi - because of short journeys. She's now got an FR 1.4 TSi 150 - cracking little car!

If you are doing 1 - 2 miles like I did over the last week and it not being able to complete a regen you will get problems

the trouble is people see to think town driving is no good for them but in reality its if it can't regen that causes issues

as I say above the wife uses ours for a 10 mile drive each way 5 times a week and never has an issue

but it was trying to do a regen for the last 4 runs out but we was doing 1 - 2 miles! the car wasn't even warming up

if you are driving enough for it to complete a regen you shouldn't have issues
