Splutter / glow plug flash!?

Hi!

Odd problem here, when driving along every so often I will get a strong shudder from the engine which lasts about a second, feels like its going to stall but then is fine after a second or so. When it does this the glow plug light flashes.

I've had it on vagcom and no codes have been stored. Was logging various data but when the light flashes my laptop lost connection to the ecu.

Also this is worse in the cold but happened again today. Any ideas!?

I thought it could be the brake light switch but this usualy happens when I'm going in a straight line at a constant speed!

Ah it is the same problem still then :D

I posted in your other thread. Anyhoo apart from what I put in the other thread I'd try the fuel filter, make sure the T piece on the return isn't cracked, also some of the tdi's suffer from a check valve thing in the sender unit causing issues, just read about it on the tdi club the other night. I'll see if I can find the thread.

Just re-read your first post, glow plug light flashes? I wonder if it could be something to do with the #3 injector lift sensor or wiring.
Also do you still have the egr and asv connected?

Have you noticed anything else like the rev counter jumping about or anything like that?

The flashing glow plug light is throwing me off. Mmm, what about the connections for the fuel pump and the #3 injector? Have you been over them with contact cleaner?
I'm just grasping at straws really, I'm a bit stumped :D

I know what you mean its got me stumped too! With the glow plug light flashing everytime and vagcom loosing connection i have no clue what's going on!

I haven't gone over those connections but I will do, what sort of stuff would you reccomend to do it with, I've only got petroleum jelly at home!

I was thinking of something like servicol, you get it in electrical shops, iron mongers sometimes etc. I'm just thinking there could be a bad/dirty connection somewhere, especially the state your battery wires were in lol. Did you ever open up your ecu too to check it wasn't manked inside? The case on mine had actually become porous so I cleaned it up and coated it with clear silicone sealant before puting it all back together. Maybe your ecu is all wet again if you didn't seal it all up the last time.
It actually sounds like it could be a glitch with your tps, that causes the revs to go and causes the flashing glow plug light, when mine did that it was the wet ecu caused it. I bought a brand new tps (nearly £200 ffs!) and it's only been on the car about 18 months or so, still not very old and I can sort you out with it if needed .

I think it could be wiring related too now, was going down the motorway and hit a big bump, immidiately the glo plug light flashed and the revs dropped from 2500 to about 2200 and it did this a few times in a row, I kept my foot dead steady on the throttle and the revs kept dropping everytime the glo plug light flashes.

Also this time the tcs light came on and stayed on so fingers crossed a code has been stored. Question is are the glo plug light curcuit and tcs fault circuit linked?

I've had a look at the outside of the ecu and it's bone dry, no signs of the slightest dampness. It's been wrapped tight in a black bag!

Will try and get some of that contact cleaner and check over some of the wiring and see if I can find anything.

Oh and the tps, when yours went did it throw a code? Not a bad idea, didn't think of that. Is it similar to the clutch pedal position sender, ie could it be cleaned out atall?

Yeh I had a code for mine and no you can try and clean it out bit it wont work again lol, don't ask.

I wonder if this could still be related to your abs problem, you changed some of the wiring for that didn't you? Don't know exactly how it would be related but maybe it's the loom near where you joined the abs wire in.

Didn't you fit a new wire and plug for one of the sensors too? Just wondering if it could all be related in some way.

Well I've finally got a fault code but its quite strange, 01314. Points towards a dead ecu and is usualy a code from a car that won't start. However it was pulled from my running engine and the wierdest part is where it was pulled. For some reason I couldn't communicate with the ecu so this code appeared under the abs section!!!

Na no recent map, I looked at the wiki and the only thing I can think is there may be a dodgy earth or connection or broken wire somwhere.

Googled the crap out of he code and read a load of stories, could be 109 giving up on me so might swap it and see if vagcom will communicate with the ecu then.

I just thought it was a funny thing to say on the rosstech site.

Have you messed about with the stereo at all? That can screw up the k-line thing which can screw with the obd port.
