Importance of using VW 505.01 in a PD Engine

As this has been asked on several occasions I thought it would be wise to explain the background to the VW 505.01 oil and why it's so important to use it in a PD engine.

It is vitally important to use a PD oil in the PD engine due to the pump.

The VW pd engines are very severe on the oil, the mechanical fuel pump delivers fuel at approx. 25,000 psi !!!!! to enable a very precise injector spray pattern which, in turn, gives excellent driving characteristics.

The very high loads on the fuel pump will lead to VI improver shear down and oil viscosity loss if the engine is operated on lesser oils.

The surest way to shorten the life of your engine is to ignore this advice.

PD engines use PD oil 505.01 as stated in this thread.

The one SEAT exception is also noted in this thread is the Ibiza Cupra PD (Engine Code BPX) which uses long life oil 506.01 though is still set to fixed (10K) service intervals.

It is likely that future engines will also use this 506.01 standard oil.

"seat recommend PD cars above 150BHP use longlife oil (506 01) even on regular service intervals"

not currently true, see my thread above.

SEAT info on the 507.00:

Engine Type - TDi with particulate filter expected 2nd quarter 2006.
Also can be used in TD, SDi and TDi. It specifically does not mention that 507.00 can go into PD engines.

The 504.00 can go into petrol engines.

yes indeedy so

Now I don't know much about the techie stuff that goes with remaps but surely he has still got the same basic 130 engine so 505.01 is fine? The oil is to do with the mechanics of the engine, not any software thngy. Not that the 506.01 is the wrong oil, just more expensive

oilman - as you seem to know a lot about oil, you wouldn't be in the buisness would you ? if so, would you happen to know anywhere in the UK that will do oil analysis for eg. wear metals / fuel / water etc for regular people rather than big firms ? used to get stuff done through a contact at Shell but he's retired now

Cheers

Castrol 505.01 oil

I use Castrol Turbo Diesel Edge 5W-40 for my New Toledo 1.9Tdi.

Its specially produced by Castrol for VW PD diesels with fixed interval servicing and meets VW 505.01.

Costs about £ 12.00 for 1 litre at Halfords.
