API - American Petrolium Institute (Standards in America)

oilgraphic500.jpg

What the API codes mean;

S/C - Petrol and diesel engine oils.
(S indicates 's'park-plug ignition and C indicates 'c'ompression ignition)

The second letter indicates the quality of the oil, the better the 2nd letter the better the oil. At present (05/08/2008) the latest code is SM (spark ignition) and CJ-4 (compression ignition).

Spark Ignition Classifications
'SM' - For all automotive engines presently in use. Introduced in the API service symbol in November 2004.

'SL' - For all automotive engines presently in use. Introduced in the API service symbol in 1998.

'SJ' - For all automotive engines presently in use. Introduced in the API service symbol in 1996.

Obsolete codes; 'SH' (1996), 'SG' (1993), 'SF' (1988), 'SE' (1979), 'SD' (1971), 'SC' (1967), 'SB', 'SA'.

Compression Ignition Classifications
'CJ-4' - Introduced in 2006 for high-speed four-stroke engines. Designed to meet 2007 on-highway exhaust emission standards. CJ-4 oils are compounded for use in all applications with diesel fuels ranging in sulphur content up to 500ppm (0.05% by weight). However, use of these oils with greater than 15ppm sulfur fuel may impact exhaust aftertreatment system durability and/or oil drain intervals. CJ-4 oils are effective at sustaining emission control system durability where particulate filters and other advanced aftertreatment systems are used. CJ-4 oils exceed the performance criteria of CF-4, CG-4, CH-4 and CI-4.

'CI-4' - Introduced in 2002 for high-speed four-stroke engines. Designed to meet 2004 exhaust emission standards implemented in 2002. CI-4 oils are formulated to sustain engine durability where exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is used and are intented for use with diesel fuels ranging in sulphur content up to 0.5% weight. Can be used in place of CD, CE, CF-4, CG-4 and CH-4.

'CH-4' - Introduced in 1998 for high-speed four-stroke engines. CH-4 oils are specifically designed for use with diesel fuels ranging in sulphur content up to 0.5% weight. Can be used in place of CD, CE, CF-4 and CG-4.

'CG-4' - Introduced in 1995 for high-speed four-stroke engines. CG-4 oils are specifically designed for use with diesel fuels ranging in sulphur content less than 0.5% weight. CG-4 oil needs to be used for engines meeting 1994 emission standards. Can be used in place of CD, CE and CF-4.

'CF-4' - Introduced in 1990 for high-speed four-stroke naturally aspirated and turbo engines. Can be used in place of CD and CE.

'CF-2' - Introduced in 1994 for severe duty, two stroke motorcycle engines. Can be used in place of CD-II.

'CF' - Introduced in 1994 for off-road, indirect-injected and other diesel engines including those using fuel over 0.5% weight sulphur. Can be used in place of CD.

Obsolete codes; 'CE' (1987), 'CD-II' (1987), 'CD' (1955), 'CC' (1961), 'CB' (1949), 'CA' (1940)

Its members include: BMW, Volkswagen Group, Volvo, Ford, DAF, Renault, Fiat Group, Scania AB, Porsche, Mercedes, PSA Peugeot Citroën, and MAN AG.

oilgraphic501.jpg

What the ACEA codes mean;

A/B - Petrol and diesel engine oils.
(A indicates a petrol engine oil and B is for light duty diesel engines - only this is a complete marketing ploy, A is suitable for B and B is suitable for A ;))

C - Catalyst/Diesel Particulate Filter compatible oils.

The second number indicates the quality of the oil, the better the 2nd number the better the oil. At present (05/08/2008) the latest code is A5/B5.

A1/B1
Oils intended for use in petrol and diesel car and light commercial vehicles specifically capable of using low friction, low viscosity oils with high temperature / high shear characteristics.

A3/B3
For use in high performance petrol and diesel cars and light commercials where extended drain intervals are specified by the vehicle manufacturer and / or for year-round use of low viscosity oils and / or for use in severe operating conditions as defined by the vehicle manufacturer.

A3/B4
For use in high performance petrol and direct injection diesel engines. Also suitable for applications described under B3.

A5/B5
For use at extended oil change intervals in high performance car and light commercial petrol and diesel engines designed for low viscosity oils. As A3/B4 but lowered high temperature/high shear.

C1/C2/C3
For use in high performance car and light commercial petrol and diesel engines, with diesel particulate filter, three-way catalyst and / or requiring low viscosity, low friction, catalyst compatible oils.
