hi all.

I did a 3 point turn today and noticed that the steering wheel was clicking as i did it, got to pull straight and there was a ding and an message on the screen. Error: Airbag, the airbag light is now lit.

Ignition on and off to see if it was something daft, but it stays on. I an driving home and try to turn the radio down and the buttons on the steering wheel are not working on any side, horn is also not working at all.

any ideas?

I am going to take it for a fault code reading when i can get out of work but had anyone had this before?

2012 FR+ is what im driving. really annoying!

Thanks

Does anyone know what the part number is for these? Will a golf one work? Cheers

Just seen your reply to other thread, I'll reply here -

That's exactly the same thing that happened to me.

I think you'll need full VCDS for coding the module, and pulling a part number, as the slip ring setup can vary between cars. My one was integrated with the steering wheel controller, making it the most expensive one to replace, some as cheaper.

Part number is/was 5K0.953.569.E The part I replaced it with was revised I think to 5K0.953.569.H but dealer will keep you right.

my log:

Address 16: Steering wheel Labels: 5K0-953-569.clb
Control Module Part Number: 5K0 953 521 BN HW: 5K0 953 569 E
Component and/or Version: LENKS.MODUL 009 0136
Software Coding: 1082140002
Work Shop Code: WSC 99999 1023 2097151
ASAM Dataset: EV_SMLSNGVOLWS A01004 (SE35)
ROD: EV_SMLSNGVOLWS.rod
VCID: 79FD950DF8059C8ECD-802C

So if your VCDS scan says the same number after HW: then it'll be the same part, the letter will probably be different tho. The number after software coding it what you need to put into recode the new module and it should work as before after that. Again, you'll need VCDS to do this, I expect the full version too.

Its not really a hard job, anyone handy with a screwdriver should be able to manage it.

I'll try help if you have any more questions

You could also pull the steering wheel off to look at the part number, but it will need coded so you cant get away with a straight swap without VCDS or something similar anyway.

sorry - just to avoid any doubt, the number after software coding needs to come from your car, not the one from my scan

Cheers for the info mate. I don't have VCDS at the minute, and i know this is pretty expensive to buy. I was really hoping I could just buy a new slip ring and replace it like for like, without coding it in. as I could get a mechanic mate to do this.
Might have to take a plunge and take it to a VAG specialist or a dealer... I bet this is going to be expensive!

Check the forum for members with VCDS near you, there is a section somewhere. I'm in Edinburgh, doubt that's north east enough for you though!

Just had the scan done and its almost identical to yours, Same part number and the same coding. I am going to try sourcing a 2nd hand part for the fix, if not will be dealer. cheers for your help mate!

Eventually got round to blagging a mate to fit my new clock spring tonight, cost 210 quid for the part!!

He has put everything back as normal and everything like the horn and the airbag seems to work now, the steering wheel buttons also work to an extent, but the scrolling left and right on the right had side buttons do not work so i can not cycle through the MFD screens. The radio can be controlled by the other buttons and i can control the phone book by the up and down and the back button but the left and right scrolling between the other screens on the MFD do not work - Any ideas if this needs to be coded in still? seems the radio and the other buttons are fine.

I am sure when it was first connected back up that this was working, as the screen it was on was the total time of last travel and this was changed to the radio selection, not its stuck on the phone book! i hope this can be solved.

when you replaced yours, what worked before you coded it in?

Cheers

No expert, but that sounds like a loose / broken connection when being reassembled. I can't see the coding failing in that way, it would be either all or nothing. But again, I'm no expert. First thing to do would be scan for errors and try check the coding is indeed the same.

If the errors werent cleared initially, there will be loads about the steering wheel that need to be cleared before rescanning.

Its at my mates work today so he can take it to a place nearby for a look at it. The cruise control also doesnt work so i am hoping it is the coding, I'm sure if has a different coding number than what the old unit had. I think its an auto electrician so they should know what to do with it.

If its coded in right and still doesnt scroll left and right, I will ask him to take it apart again and then make sure all of the connections are secure. Real PITA this one!

Cheers

Been to the auto electricians and its still not scrolling left and right. the cruise control is now working ok but not the MFD.

I am going ot get my mate to take it all apart again and see if the connections are all seated correctly. not sure where to go from there if they are, could it be the buttons that are broke? they worked ok before the slip ring went.

Also got 3 codes left showing on carista, all look like the steering wheel angle sensor, i read on a forum that this should be disabled on the newer cars, is this the case?

got this sorted now. the coding that was put on to fix the cruise control was wrong. i borrowed a mates computer and this allowed me to put the right code onto the module. got there in the end!

Sorry to dig up an old thread but I have exactly this issue, Cruise control not working and can't scroll left and right on MFD display since replacing clock spring. Do you by any chance remember what settings needed to be changed on VCDS?

I've found on steering wheel module, there's a selection that the cruise is controlled by buttons on the steering wheel which it isn't when I try to change this to direction indicator stalk, the coding isn't accepted.

Any help anyone can offer would be really appreciated!

I fixed mine with a mates computer connected to my car it wasnt VCDS. I put the same code as was displayed on the original unit and then it worked almost straight away. daft thing was I give the code to my mate who took it to the auto electricians, but they thought that they knew best and input a wrong code. Once i changed this it worked ok

Has yours stopped working suddenly? might be a broken slip ring like mine was, horn working?
