Immobiliser problem

I've had my ibiza for about 3 years with no probs until recently. Immobiliser seems to be kicking in occasionally. No rhyme or reason to the frequency of this. I can drive the car for weeks and then jump in - turn the ignition - she starts and then cuts out dead. A mechanic friend told us re some sequence with opening the driver's door etc which resets the immobiliser which scarily works but this isn't fixing the problem. Had the car hooked up to the computer but it came up blank! Seat dealers say it could be a number of things (like garages tend to!) including some sensors under the dash board which will cost £300 - 400 to fix but can't guarantee this will fix it if replaced? I was thinking perhaps the relay? Any help welcome.

Hi. Sounds like I have the same problem! Just had the immobiliser pick up in the car's ignition replaced, after waiting 2 weeks for the part from Spain. Only just got the car back, went to move it onto the drive, and hey guess what!! The darned thing won't start. Did you get anything sorted with yours?

Welcome to the Club. :)

I have a 2003 Ibiza and last summer i had the exact symptoms that you guys have. the car would not start at times, and than again after a few tries it started. The problem progressed to the point that i had to try 30 times to get one start. It will not get better so start working on it. The service @ Seat had no idea what was wrong and did not want to order the suspect part which was the antenna in the lock of the ignition. They were not sure, i was not willing to pay a replacement part for something which might not be broken.

what i did was i removed the immobilizer from the computer and drove the car until i got it sorted. The problem was a crack in the wiring and the plate which prevented contact and the code from the key via the antenna could not be transmitted.

good luck. let us know the outcome.

Hi Alex! Thanks for the info. How did you remove the immobiliser from the computer? I suspect it may well come to that!

well Bev i see that you have two options. 1. to take it to the service and have them try to diagnose it and fix it. 2. you might want to remove the immobilizer from the ECU.

with the first one you risk the service changing parts which are not faulty or have a hairline fracture in the connectors which can be solved in 2 mins but you still end up paying. with the second one you get to have the car running without immo protection and have a annoying yellow immo-key light blinking all the time. but you have the car running.

one local shop had an unlocked immobilizer software for the immo chip in the ECU and we flashed it. this does not take just a guy with a VAGCOM but a qualified specialist who can physically take out the chip and swap the programming. i do not have the actual bin file which was put on my car because i would have sent it to you.

good luck on this and please let us know how it goes.

Have you had any joy with the car? Mine played up again on Thursday and has been stranded in the car park at work ever since. Tried to get her started again this morning but no joy! General feedback is the dash sensors need replaced - JeniRos

Hi again! I ended up having to have the dash board clocks changed which incorporates the part of the immobiliser that's faulty, at a cost of £450.00.

I have since found out that audi TT's have the same dash clocks, and have the same fault, but audi will replace them at no charge.

2 days after getting the car back, the turbo broke! Talk about bad luck!!! I'm now waiting for a quote to fix that.

Immobiliser

What a nightmare! I got a trailer organised to pick mine up on Thursday night past - after pushing it onto the trailer half way the battery died! I had told my hubbie about a previous thread on this website where the user banged on the dash above the rev counter and he tried this and the car started! unbelievable. Drove her home and turned her off and on again and she didn't start - whacked the dash again and she started! I think my relationship with Ibiza's is over! She's going to auction next week! We should all write to Seat as this seems to be a production fault! Jeni:doh:

Seat UK say they have never heard of this!! 3 of our local seat dealers, have each repaired 3-4 within the last month.

The battle continues!!

Immobiliser fault

Yeah - tell me about it - this was the reply I received from them! Told them that Audi are willing to fix this problem on their cars free of charge but to no avail. The fight continues.......
