Ive had an error message come up when VAG-coming my car (2005 Leon PD150 FR+) which has been diagnosed as the glow plug in cylinder 1 as faulty. Ive not even gone as far as removing my engine cover but dont mind having a go at changing these myself as long as it's no great job?

I didnt know if anyone culd tell me how to go about it or if there was an available guide?

Also... I would assume that if I am to change one heater plug I may as wel change them all at thew same time as they would come in a set?

Also when starting the car on a morning, the light flashes on the temperature guage, if i turn the engine off then back on again the problem doesnt persist and the guage reads acurately. Could this be linked to the glow plug problem or does the temperature sensor need replacing also?

Thnaks in advance!

some may say lala land....
when mine went i had all four changes as just easier and why do the labour twice when another goes...
and going by other threads, they can follow over time.

i had to change my harness about 3months later, which i was warned may well happen, so depends upon time and inclination could do all in one shot

At the risk of sounding a clueless muppet... whats the harness? Ive heard of people having a knackered bridge with this problem? Like I say is it a tricky job to get to them and is there a guide anywhere I could follow?

Cheers!

I've got this problem too mate,

cylinder 2 plug went first, (stealers did the work that time) now plug 4 is faulting (not keen on taking it to the stealers again if its not too much of a job to to myself.

so as johntheboy said, any guide or tips would me massively helpful :help:

How much did a new harness set you back oldman? :( and how did you know it had to be changed?

the harness is the black plug that you push onto the plugs
all four in one one piece with wiring that snakes around to near the pollen filter.

i had the garage do the plugs, as easier for me and no tools.
the harness bridge, i followed a guide, a quick search should be enough and took me about 3-4hrs as took time and didn't know what was doing, and couldn't let myself do a garage cheap effort on it

the light flashing on the temprature gauge is the level warnign light and is usually caused by the prongs that are in the header tank becoming "gunked" up a good clean should sort the problem

Thanks for the info on the harness! Hopefully that won't have gone. You mentioned you didnt have the tools to get the glow plugs out... do you just need basic socket set tools to get to it or is it a bit more tricky?

Im still completely un-aware as to where the glow plus actually sit in relation to the engine. I would have assumed they wuld sit towards the front or top of the engine once you remove the cover?

Thanks for the advice on that one. After having a quick look I take it the prongs you refer to are the ones which sit inside the small resiviour within the headder tank? When you say to clean these do you mean to remove the headder tank or is there a more obvious way to do this? Also the water is sittin pretty much right on the maximum marker, is it worth giving it a slight top up?

Cheers.

to clean, small flat headed long screwdriver, unscrew lid, insert and scrap

i believe just a sprocket set, but not sure, with a long holder to keep plug in socket -> not sure if that made sense, sorry

failing with task or re-attaching egr -> pain in the fecking butt

I recently had error 17055 on my PD150.

To change the glow plug you will need a 10mm deep socket with 1/2" drive.

1. Pop off the black engine cover. No tools required. Pull it up at the front and then the back.
2. Straight in front of you, you will see the black harness. It is below the oil cap and above the dipstick if I recall correctly.
3. The cylinders are L-R. Cylinder 1 on the left, Cylinder 4 on the right as you look at it.
4. Pull off the hardness on the glow plug you need to change. If you are only changing cylinder 1 (I did as my local garage only had one in stock else I would have done them all) it may be easier to pop it off cylinder 2 as well so that you have a bit of room to bend the hardness out of the way a little bit.
4. Use the deep socket to remove the plug.
5. Reverse the steps to put a new one in.

Hope that helps.

I take it this only effects Starting, I have seen no difference in performance.........

Yes, only for starting. Glow plugs are only used on startup to bring up the temperature of the engine block to aid start (one for each cylinder usually). Once the engine is running they are not required. I'm not sure at what threshold they kick in. You should see no issues with performance.

I've just had exactly the same thing go on mine - bought new plug for £10.64, (had to buy 10mm deep socket) but fitted within 5 minutes! Cleared code using VAGCOM - looks sorted now!

Do you still have to clear the code after fitting or will the light go off by it's self?

I'm not sure if error codes time out. Judging by the amount of people that mention clearing codes I would guess that it is a fair amount of time or that they don't time out.

I cleared the code through VAG COM straight after when I had a glow plug problem. Only took a minute.
