Cars just gone in on warranty because of coolant loss issue. They told me theyre fixing the cylinder head gasket and that was the fault and apparently its a common weak point on mk2 2.0tdis from 2006 - 2008 models :S
I read through here that a few of you had coolant loss issues on mk2s and have just used that radiator sealant stuff. Just wondering if you could be sitting on something more serious long run. My advice is get it checked. I had 3 days left on my warranty. Close call or what :S

Normally a pourous head on the 2.0 TDi tbh rather than a head gasket but im sure they have looked at it fully.

Had a fair few in the early days on the Golfs.

Used to take the inlet manifold off and leave overnight with a pressure tester on it, by morning the intake port on cylinder 1 would be wet. The head castings were pourous so coolant would leak internally into the engine and get burnt off.

[2.0 TDI] How to know if your cylinder head will Crack (if it hasnt yet)?
Basically, there are 3 references for the cylinder heads on your 2.0 Tdi BKD engine.

Open the bonnet, remove the engin cover, and to the right of the cylinder head, under the metalic fuel lines, you will see a references written upside down, with a letter at the end. Over in another forum, a survey was made with the following results.

03G 103 308 A years 2003 to 2005.55 allmost all cracked
03G 103 308 B years 2005.5 to 2006.6 only a few cracked
03G 103 308 C years 2006.5 to 2007.5 none cracked cracked

This means that for those of you who have had theirs replaced, or even with a new car, check out the letter on your reference for peace of mind.

Hope this helps

Just had it back today. They replaced the whole head. Im gonna check the serial number tomorrow when its light, just to make sure ;) thanks for the info though! :)
Have to say though, i am really impressed with Barlows in Wolverhampton. My car is fairly modded, remapped, etc and they still did the warranty work. They Cleaned it, valleted and courtesy car chucked in too :D ..all the same im happy to have it back though

Something nobody i speak to seems to realise is that the PD170 head 03G 103 373G fits a PD140 as well which none i have heard of have been known to crack. Pics of the two heads side by side HERE
If anyone needs any engine parts i have PD140 and PD170 engines and parts for sale.

Check mine, and its "03G 103 308 B". Its a 55 plate 2.0TDI Sport.

Fingers crossed its ok, or does the fact its B and not A, mean its already been replaced before i purchased the car one year ago?

Is it possible for a dealer to look up a cars history to see if it had warranty work done to it at some point in its life? Or is that not held in their system?

170 camshaft is different as post combustion injection for the DPF uses another ramp on the cam lobe.

As techie has said the cams are different in the PD170 head so not correct for the PD140. I have not heard of anyone fitting a bare PD170 head to a PD140 block and gaining power. The PD170 gains it`s extra power from the more efficiant injectors and better designed turbo.

leon 2.0 140 BKD cracked head cylinder

hi there, iv had my 57 plate leon for 1 year which i bought from car giant. i have had a few issues with it though, the turbo was replaced under warranty at 94k, have had it in to check out why it smokes white on start up and its loosing coolant, also poor ecconemy, they pressure tested it and it didnt loes pressure nor did the engine pressurise, also replaced the coolant expansion tank/ cap ect .. now im being told it is most likely a crack in the head cylinder and best thing to do is sell my car imediatly :s im 21 and in the army so cash flow isnt the best at times .. my warranty wont cover cracks or porous heads :/ i will be stripping my head cylinder with my friend (a mechanic) and more than likely replacing the head .. also 2 injectors are faulty so will need to do a bit of work, the only thing thats going for me is my very good friend is willing to do all the work free. any advice on this would be much appreciated, thanks kerr
