Cupra tdi Mufflerectomy

Thought i would make a thread about this as it was what i was looking for but couldnt find.
i did watch thor racing's video etc.

Saturday i had the silencer cut out my cupra, tips welded back on, so you wouldnt notice.

i was worried it might make it sound shite and not do alot but i was very impressed!

First off the silencer weighs a tonne!
The noise is basically unnoticeable on idle just sounds airy.
But when you drive it it sounds awesome! still quiet, the only noise is the spool up and chatter.
You instantly notice the extra power, pulls better and spools up quicker, and you get a lovely chatter noise when you let off, that you cant help but love.

i would definitely recommend this to any tdi owner, best cost effective mod ive done at only £50! better sound and better power.

On the other hand i drilled the air box and made a bigger cold air feed to run with my pipercross filter and tbh it sounds awful! sounds like a chavs corsa with a k&n filter on it.

so will be getting a fresh one and just running a bigger cold air feed and not drilling it!
Just a warning to anyone thinking of doing it.

Hope this helps

i got an audi a3 air box on ebay, pretty much the same, only needed the bottom section, its a bit smoother inside compared to the seat one, so just used that with a larger cold air feed, works fine.

strickly speaking a mufflerectomy needs the cat gone too. So you've bassically got a metal pipe running from the turbo to the rear end of the car.

but the cat isnt a muffler? read thor racings thread for more details
and i thought running a straight through on a turbo diesel wasnt a great idea due to back pressure?

still partly acts like one (hence the sound increases when removed).

No need to read, I've exp first hand.

plenty of people have done it here and both mkvis and tdi club.

the down pipe and cat replacment help alot. If not just for better spooling.

cats are passive on tdi's and are not really needed. However the backbox is very restrictive and prob more so than the cat. Best to remove all the bottle necks I think.

I have a 110 TDi and am considering doing the mufflerectomy however I did not want to weld the rear section on (as I cannot weld) I was going to use a 57mm (2.25inch) connector. Would you say there is enough room for this?

Also how did you fabricate your exhaust mounts?

Do you have any pictures of the procedure or the finished product?

Thanks very much

Looks nice, shame you had to let it go, bet it was a great car when you had it though.

Thanks for the link.

Does anyone else have any pictures of their mufflerectomy?

I heard that the back box is the most restrictive part of the exhaust system so that is the best place to start.

I have the 110 TDi with no hole in the bumper so I am planning to put a bend and leave it hidden away (saves me ruining the bumper).

I have heard people saying that when you remove the cat the exhaust is noticeably louder. The Thor Racing video shows that with just the back box removed there is a significant increase which is dyno proven (and at the minimum you're not carrying around that heavy back box).

I was planning on smoothing in the bumper but never got round to it.

It is louder but only when booting it. Also the odd pigeon sound on lift off is more pronounced.

The back box is restrictive, but he cat is not far behind plus downpipe.
I'd take the vids with a pinch of salt. They are jap specialists? Plus one vid says over 300lbft torque? Which ain't going to happen on a stock 150 turbo

are you talking about the cat here? i love the pigeon sound haha ive had a supercharger had vtec but never a turbo.

So if i removed my cat as well as my non existent back box it would free up the flow, not really effect noise apart from booting it and increase the screaming pigeon? me likey :funk:

i plan on getting it remapped after the shitty weather has passed as well.

Tbh it will be louder on normal driving, but it's not too bad. I guess it depends on tube size etc. I had a full milltek first with milltek downpipe, which removes the cat. Then later I dumped the backbox. The downpipe decat makes the turbo spool much easier and helps for later mods like hybrids etc. I was spooling a good 400-500 earlier and with bit less lag. Was one of my fav car sounds, as it was very different. I've had few v6's, various four pots and had a roots supercharger fitted on a v6. Nothing sounds the same. however the roots was the best sounding :)

nice stuff!
you would of thought that a miltek silencer would make it quieter than a straight pipe lol weird.
might have to do this. only thing is every car ive owned has been loud and neighbors hate me, and i swore id keep this one quiet! need to look at vids i think.
cheers for ya help
