I am going to be replacing my engine for a 1.6 (currently 1.4 but has problems).

This is a question as the car is not a standard 1.6 where is the best (cheapest) places to go for insurance cos i assume that normal insurance companies are going to be expensive.

My firm (yes car insurance) wouldn't accept the engine change and they referred me to one of their own partner firms hu quoted me £800+ for a new 1 year policy.

No don't be an idiot - You have to declare it. Maybe debadging your car don't bother. But an engine is a big deal..

If you are over 19 hun try HIC - Herts Insurance Company - they are brokers but they will get you a good deal. They don't care about modifications on the outside, they right it all down but it doesnt affect the premium. And they are really good when it comes to engine mods.

Good luck - let me know how it goes.

Don't tell the insurance company!
The 1.6 and 1.4 engines look identical anyway! So just fit the plastic cover off a 1.4 onto the 1.6!
The only problem being if you do crash the insurance company may check all the codes, as I believe the engine is marked with the chassis number or some other code that relates to that specific car!

Dont be a f*ck wit, declaire it, i never declaired my hybrid turbo or my fmic, but did my exhaust, brakes, suspension and wheels and luckily i got away with it as they havent mentioned anything as of yet. It really isnt worth the risk mate, i realise now that what i did was stupid, as it was running 80 bhp more than standard. All they needed to do was check a few things and i could have had my insurance invalidated. Its up to you, but id personally advise against it.

Don't you have to tell the DVLA if you change the engine number as it's on your V5? If so, then I'm sure that insurance co will find out,

Yes you do have to tell both the DVLA and your insurance company. You are breaking the law if you dont.

Yes you have to declare it to the dvla and the insurance will find out that way either way. And I'm sure you'll get in more trouble if you don't.

Don't listen to people telling you not to declare it.

Declare it, don't be stupid. If you have an accident and the insurance company voids your policy you might have to pay for the damages to your car and the third parties and that could leave you in a very bad position.

actually - from 1.4 to 1.6 would change tax brackets wouldn't it?

Car Tax evation.... I think that carries the worst fine of the lot.

Insurance *would* pay out the 3rd party though.

The insurance would pay out to the TP but they would probably look to claim their costs back off of you. And if injury or anything is involved - good luck trying to worm your way out of that one.

I'd declare it. If you don't, won't they realise in your MOT when they check your chassis number, etc. ?

Sell it and just buy a 1.6. Or if you can afford the insurance/car, a 2.0 :D
