take your top boost hose off and look inside the inlet manifold and have a look at all the black sludge that's in there restricting the air flow,
in some cases it causes the EGR to stick open and then the car runs like a bag of poo.
once it's removed the sludge can't build up so better for the engine.
depending on what engine you have you can just unplug the vac hose and bung it up and your car will run fine.
some later engines need a bit coming through to satisfy the ecu that's why the blank plate with the hole, to reduce the amount of exhaust gases coming through but enough to keep the ECU happy.
if you fit an EGR delete pipe the ECU will chuck up a fault light so it need taking out via the remap route.
it is a worthwhile thing to do

So it doesn't really 'make my car faster mate' type crap that performance companies will try to flog you then, I have no idea where to look got a pic? If I do it before edition38 I know someone going who is going to VAGCOM check my car anyway. What so buy from where then?

In front of a PC....

Hey,

Try here Allard are pretty good with their Diesel tuning stuff.
The EGR can be found on this page where it also describes the fix that Jimbo was talking about.

if you follow the boost pipe that runs up the left hand side of your engine cover it does a 90 degree turn into the engine there is a flying saucer shaped thing that's the EGR valve,
if you release the clip that holds the pipe onto it you can pull the pipe off and look inside.

ah right thanks Jase, I was just sceptical as people can talk crap on here about things that 'make teh car run better' which is actually all in their head and a real mechanic will laugh at you but performance companies won't as they can make a quick buck! Think I will also ask about this on tdi sport forum think I not heard it much as not too many diesel owners on here, maybe there is now (I don't post much in this section any more as bored of newbies questions)

well I did the EGR removal on my Discovery and it did make a difference on that but that's a tractor engine.
everything I've done to my FR I have chosen well and have noticed a definite difference on everything that I have done.
the one thing left on my list is a turbo back exhaust

hey slight change of convo, but does anyone elses egr on their 1.9tdi pump out oil through the hole on the front of the egr!? i have cleaned my egr a few months ago but it did it the same before i cleaned it!

where do you get the little gasket from for the egr on the blt engine?

cheers

well the reason I thought you did it Jim is as you had the hesitation, I do not so didn't think there was much point. Jim you have not had a remap how did you turn off the light then?

I've not removed, i've reduced it.

It therefore reduced the amount of hot awful exhaust gases that go into the intake for combustion, therefore more cooler air, better performance.

Dave@Seremotors can supply, and it throws no lights

it seems this might be worth doing, where can you get the new valve from??

will it work on my engine, or is it for a newer version?

should work on most engines, ino of people who done it to diesels and felt the difference, even people with alfa romeo JTD's.

im still in dispute weather to pay 60 for the allard blank pipe or just go for the blanking plate which is alot cheaper.
it seems to make sense as the EGR exhaust gas recirculation ... it will just be putting used nasty warm air back into the engine (manufacturers put it there to keep emissions down) ... so blanking this must mean strictly unused new cool air .... which would mean better combustion ... hence better performance and economy :):)

theres another thing which was more suited for the BLT engines which was a small blanking plate with a hole in it, think it went onto a gasket pipe or something and it did the same thing. most people with skoda fabia VRS were doing it.

from my understanding both the blanking plate which is about a fiver and the EGR delete pipe do the same thing, just allard have made a pipe which would look abit nicer and give the 'mod' look to the engine.

im doing this and looking into removing the stock rubber intake pipe which leads to my K&N filter and swapping it with a polished steel pipe from ebay. i get a sort of dump noise since i put the K&N filter on when i get off the throttle and press the clutch in, so am hoping the pipe makes it louder :p

the new plate still has a hole it it, just alot smaller so lets less hot air in, but it seems that people have to make it slighty larger than stock to avoid any lights coming on, ive sent sere motors and email to see how much it is.

yeah the holes so enough air can get through to make sure the engine light doesnt come on, let us know how much they charge mate.
