Have done the search but cannot find anything problem that is the same so here goes...

When sat in traffic and it also did this in a car park, the temp needle rises above 90 degrees and through to 110 degrees and the fans were not kicking in. As we were in Germany, I took it too a local garage who had a Seat racing team and they had a look. We ran the car and watch the temp needle rise. The car was switched off and they released the pressure from the coolant bottle and we watch the coolant boil out of the tank!!

I had the fan sensor replaced the next day, and it seemed to solve the problem. They advised this as this had recently happened to one of their racing cars.

Then yesterday, I was in a car park and the same thing happened after a couple of minutes. So I switched the engine off, left a couple of mins and then back on again. The same thing happened, so I switched it off again, left a couple of mins and then back on. This time at about 95 degrees the fans switched on and were spinning on the top speed. The temp dropped back down to normal. A couple on mins later they came on again, as normal, but again was on the top speed setting.

Now I have read about the resistors and fuses blowing and knocking out the low speed setting, however, when I switch the air con on, both fans spin on the low setting for a couple of mins and then off and on every couple of mins as per normal. There is also now blown fuses.

I am at a loss and the couple of places I have spoken too are as well, so does anyone have any ideas??

So to recap, when overheating, the fans sometime's kick in but only on the high speed setting.
When the aircon is on, the fans spin on the low setting as per normal every couple of mins.
There are no blown fuses etc.

Thanks for your help.

Could be the water pump but it is fairly normal most of the time, just staerts to over heat when sat and running.

How would the coolant to turbo pipe affect the fans not kicking in??

Checked all of the fuses and they are all ok.

Just got vag-com and cable today but the cable won't install on my old Windows 2000 based laptop. Vag-com will though....argh!!

Yeah temp is at 90 when driving normally.

I have had a good look at the fuse box and no signs of anything unusual.

water pump usually throws high temps when giving it the beans returning to normal when idling or in traffic.

usually yours would point to melting fuse holder on the battery.

never heard of it but could the thermostat be playing up?

Took mine to Seat and we managed to repleicate the problem. They are 100% sure that the fans are playing up and I need them replaced.

Thay have submitted a request to Seat for a goodwill and we are just awaiting to see what they say.

Blackcountry Boy!
Just had to drop my LCR (03) off at the garage as its leaking coolant everywhere. Only had my belt done 3000 miles ago and the pump was not replaced, even though it went to a VAG speciallist (Midland VW)

Not happy here at all, looking at a bill for stripping it all down again just to replace something that they should of advised me of.

I've taken it to MIJ in Walsall (a place i swore I'd never go to again after shitty service before now) and the first thing the lad said was has it had a new belt. As soon as I said yes, he shook his head and said that it was common practice to replace the pump whilst doing the cam belt as it is a know issue.

Now looking at paying twice the labour costs for something so shitty. GREAT!

/RANT

[edit] Just had a quote of £350+VAT. Includes pump, timing belt & labour. This seem like a fair quote? Cost me 400+VAT only three months ago for cam belt + 40000 mile service. Just wish they had replaced the water pump then!!

i'd be amazed if a VAG specialist (!) didn't know to change the water pump with the belt.

even the halfords techs know that much

Gonna look into a bit further once the work is sorted. Not happy at paying 2 * labour costs, so going to get a written report and get onto citizens advice. Not sure if I'll achieve anything.. but I've got to try. [:@]
