TDi Fuel Filter Improvements
I have had my Leon for a while now and I was wondering what gains can expect from changing my fuel filter?
Also what makes do people usually go for? Halfrauds? Euro Car Parts? Ebay?

Smoother running and maybe a bit more top end if the filter's bad. Most of the ones we get over here tend to be reasonable anyway.

Sounds like a good enough reason to replace it, especially as I have no idea when it was last changed.
Do you think there might be any improvement in fuel economy? I couldn't really see how but I might be wrong.

If it's clogged then yes, I think it would just because having to give extra throttle and the like. Not 100% sure but in theory lol
How's the airfilter and where's your timing at these days? New engine running sweet otherwise?

That makes sense.
The airfilter seems pretty clean and when I timed up the engine it was pure luck but it said "Dead On". I have now driven over 1000 miles so maybe a check is a wise idea! The engine seems to be running well enough, it seems a little more thirsty on fuel however it is not using oil and no black smoke when starting or at full throttle. I plan to do a compression test soon just to check everything over. Also I have now driven over 1000 miles so maybe a check of the injection timing is a wise idea!

maybe advance the timing a bit and check the IQ settings too, it's maybe set higher than before.
When I first put the engine in the golf it fired right up but it turned out the timing was like up at 90 or something lol. I have it at 70 now which is ideal for my bigger nozzles, I would set yours around 60 or so.

If I am honest I have never checked the IQ on my old or new engine. What is that responsible for?
Also what would advancing do? I thought altering the advance/retard makes more power/starting or improves economy?

IQ is injection quantity, it can help with power or economy, timing can effect the economy and starting. My timing just helps to burn the extra fuel better so I get more from it and no wasted smoke out the tail pipe.

Oh I did not know that.
How do I see the IQ using VCDS? Also how do I change it? I have heard of the hammer mod however I doubt it would need that much adjustment.

Regarding fuel filter, I know SEAT change them every 40k on PD engines, but on the newer CR engines, I was speaking to an engine tech, and also asked the guy at Volksmaster, they BOTH said that on CR engines that the fuel filter is much more important to the efficient running of the engine.
Just so anyone reading this knows :P |

I use this link, just ignore the hammer mod part as I doubt you'll need to do that, you might not need to adjust it at all

if you want a bit more "go" without spending on a "chip" there's plenty of stuff on here plus take a look on Fred's http://forums.tdiclub.com there's stacks of stuff, look out for AndyPandy from sweden has some good tips --keep you reading for ages--I would change the filter at least every 20K some would say 10-12K
