No 1st 2nd or reverse ?

My assistant managers leon cupra R will not engage in 1st, 2nd or reverse gear. He can start the engine in 3rd but, none of the other gears when he tries the car stalls. Has anyone got a clue what it could be ? He is absolutely petrified about how much its going to cost him to get it fixed !

so it doesnt engage in gear when the engine is running, but does when its not?

does the car jump forward when he starts in gear?
or does he have the clutch depressed?

could be a linkage problem, think a few leons have had that. he could try experimenting by trying to put it in gear under the bonnet rather than via the gear stick. (ENGINE NOT RUNNING!).
if that works ok then that would indicate a linkage issue.

yup sounds like the linkage to me! tell him to open the bonnet and as said someone moves the gearstick and check what happens!

The cable end could have moved on the side-side cable so it won't reach the gears at that end.

Its starting in neutral but, as soon as he engages in a gear it shudders and stalls. Is the linkage quite a common problem ? Do you think it could be something with the actual gearbox at all ?

so hes got the clutch depressed... and it stalls when he tries to put it in gear? or it stalls after gettig it in gear then trying to pull away?

linkage has been isues for a few on here, other options are gearbox or the clutch.

really should try engaging gears under bonnet to see if it is the linkage.

have a look at the short-shifter fitting guides on the web (my guide isn't that great).... You could perhaps try following the adjustment methods used to ensure that its all aligned properly?
