Oil leaking from intercooler
This morning, I noticed that there was oil that had dripped from the front offside of the car onto the drive. I am sure that this is coming out of the intercooler as when I recently had to remove the front bumper to refit some HIDs, the base of the interfooler was caked in oil and crap. There was also a lot of oil in the areas of the front bumber valance that goes beneath the IC.
A bummer but just wondering it is it normal for this much oil to go through the IC? As far as I know, charged air goes through IC with some oil but this much?? I hope I am not looking at a bigger problem other than a blown IC ![]() ![]()

Its normal but I would suggest you check the seal out of the intercooler and the one on the the pipe which joins the long one in the off side wheel arch mine was doing the same it just needed a new seal which did not cost much at all.

This is fairly typical:
http://muddyboots.fotopic.net/p15502319.html http://muddyboots.fotopic.net/p15502320.html So yes, it's normal for a small quantity of oil to accumulate in the pipes/intercooler, and to seep out around the pipe joints under pressure.

There was a clip that was undone when we had a look with the bumper off. That was re-secured. Never noticed a seal though, just IC end of the pipe going into the pipe, no seal, just a metal clip holding them together. Something missing? Is it possible to have a look without taking the bumper off, just unfastening and pulling back the wheen liner??

There should be a rubber ring that sits on the outside of the pipe insert (ie the male half
) and seals it into the housing.

You will always get some oil in the charge pressure and inevitably some will come out of the joints or in some cases just one joint.
It does come out of the intercooler joint on mine and I cant stop it but its not that much so I have left it!. |

Agreed Stew, makes me wonder whether the O-ring is missing or damaged.

Back to this topic again
![]() I cleaned all the exterior of the IC with Gunk about a month ago and underneath around the join. That was roughly a month ago and now there is so much oil, starting to drip once again. In a month the car covers about 1,400 miles. If it is the O Ring that is damaged / missing, is it simply pulling the IC away from pipework and replacing the O Ring? Thanks.

Righto, ETKA lists the seals for the intercooler as "Part number unknown" but links them to the inlet and outlet pipes, so it could well be that Seat don't supply them as a single part.
However, ETKA for VW lists the same engine (ARL) for the Golf GT TDI and they list the seals seperately as "1J0 145 117 A" for both inlet and outlet on the intercooler connections. Different part numbers for seals further on down the line. Maybe nip along to a VW dealer and ask them.

This is in case some of you out there do not know this.
All parts for seat/vw now come direct form TPS (trade parts supply) who effectively are vw. If you can get them from a vw dealer you can get them from TPS. I believe you can buy direct form TPS without a trade account, effectively cutting out the useless Seat dealer (sorry mine really is crap). Just find the TPS outlet nearest to you. Glynn
