No sound from Seat aura stereo

Dear All,

i'm a newbie to this forum so please be gentle.

I am the very proud owner of a 2000 Seat Leon 1.8T in silver with Black/blue check interior.

The car is great apart from one niggling little problem.

There is no sound from the stereo, I have power to the unit and it tells me what radio station it is tuned to put no sound at all, I popped the stereo out and discovered 2 connector blocks on the back, the first is at the top of the stereo and contains 2 mini-iso connections that slot together to make one connector block, I am assuming that 1 is for the amp, 1 is for the glovebox changer and the other i am guessing is for the display in the instrument binnacle.

The second connector plugs into the bottom of the unit and has 6 wires going to it, they they all seem to be secure although it would be nice to know which colour does what just in case i have to swap the unit for an afternarket one.

I am thinking thatb there maybe a problem wity the amp, so i guess i need help with a few things as follows

1. Does anyone know what each of the 6 wires in the connector do.
2. Where is the amp
3. Is it fused if so where
4. Anything else that could be wrong

Well they both work in so much that they take a tape and cd and tell me thats what is playing, but still no sound at all.

There should be a 3rd cable for the changer?

One mini-loom does power, earth etc (that will be the one with the thick red and black wires in it). The other does all the speakers. If you need a pic of the wiring loom you could always do a search...the amp is built into the stereo.

It could be that the internal amp within the stereo has gone, the only way to clarify this is to unplug it all and get someone with a bit of stereo fitting knowledge to fit it all back together if that does not work then its likley the amp has gone...

As far as I can tell there should be three connector blocks plus the aerial connector behind the Aura head unit, and it's the middle one that has all the speaker connections. The top block is in three parts, (yellow(6)/green(6)/blue(8)) and the 8-pin blue part has the CD changer connections.

The middle 8-pin block connector is brown and has the speaker connections.

The lower 8-pin block is black and has the power connections, amongst others.

thats what I found, If I buy a stereo from Argos would the connectors fit in straight away or would they need an adaptor?

If you buy an aftermarket headunit (ie from Argos) then you'll need a facia adapter and to swap the switched and permanent live feeds round. This can be done with an adapter harness (Autoleads probably do one) or if you buy an Alpine headunit there are bullet connectors for this purpose.

I finally bought a JVC head unit and installed and its all working fine (apart from the radio!)

Going to sell the CD changer now as I don't need it

You'll need an aeriel booster to sort the radio out

has anyone got a picture of the back of the sterio as i dont know how to take it out but would like to know if it has pre outs for an amp..???

Bit late as you've obviously changed your h/u now but it might have been the phone mute wire shorting against some metal and thinking it was getting a 'call in progress' signal thus cutting sound from the stereo!

Strange one I know but this has happened to me in the past with a couple of head units...

sorry to go off subject, but it is pointless startin a new thread....why does the stereo seem to go louder the faster you drive?

That's some baaaaaad juju - your car is possessed and the only way to cure it is to give it to me for about 18 months.

Or...

It's a standard feature on the Aura stereo - I found it a pain in the arse myself.

Go into the menu and turn 'SCV' off - this will stop it from happening. It's supposed to compensate for road/engine noise but is not very good on the Aura - many other manufacturers do this feature a lot better
