How to change your headlamps to xenon

Hello,

It is a legality to have self levelling and headlight washers on Xenon's....

If you fit self levelling (front and rear axle sensors) you will need an upgraded On Board Voltage control unit (PR code for Xenons) and you will need a headlight control module!

You will also need to upgrade the wiring between on board voltage and the Xenons as the igniters carry a greater amp load.....fire anyone??...oh dont forget to install the correct rating fuse either!

Plus the ball ache of fitting headlight washers!

Xenons aren't just a bolt on part!

Regards,

well this is far more "legal" than just get a xenon kit because this wont blind anyone.

you dont need the voltage control unit its the same if the car has xenon or halogen

you need the headlight control unit with the axle sensors

again you are wrong with the cables they are the same in the cars with halogen and xenon, besides the tension load of the amps in the xenon last micro seconds and the car then consume 35w, with halogen you are consuming 55w at all time which the cable needs to be more robust in either case they use the same cable for both applications

and the headlight washer is the easiest of the mods.

if you want xenon in your car the best you can do is this, buy the oem headlamps with projectors and the headlight washers.

Get them coded in, via VAG-COM!

Seeing as I cannot find a clear answer, if I retro-fit xenons onto my FR, WITHOUT fitting the headlamp washers, will my car be legal, or illegal?

If illegal, why so? There is nothing in the MOT test that would cause a failure, hence my query.

Thanks all!

As said in my thread regarding these, you could buy just the headlights costing £328 and an aftermarket HID kit around £90, change the car loom connector to the new one to fit the Bi-xenon headlights ('how to' shown 1st page on this thread) and should be ok.

May have to wire the aftermarket HID kit using a relay which you can buy the kit of eBay etc so you dont melt any wires and maybe turn Bi-xenons on using VAG-Com.

hoping to try this next year

Im surprised if no one has allready done this as its a very common modification on all other car forums.

Thats a big of a ****ed up way of doing it..

why not just...

buy just the headlights costing £328 and matching bulbs, change the car loom connector to the new one to fit the Bi-xenon headlights ('how to' shown 1st page on this thread) and should be ok.

Done it myself. No self levelling, washers, nothing. best 300 quid i've spent. NOt had any problems with the levelling being fixed.

When you say matching bulbs, what kind do you mean because we are all talking about having HIDs/Xenons so which ever way, you need the bulbs and ballasts,
OEM = £540
Aftermarket = £90

You claiming it costs 540 quid for 2 x bulbs and 2 x ballasts to suit the Bi Xenon lamps?

I bought mine off someone on here, but i have the original invoice and its about the 500 mark all in to get all the OEM parts.

Remember, you dont have to buy the bulbs & "ballasts /starters from Seat. Who i presume like most car manufacturers want over 100 a bulb. You can easily pick up the same bulb online for half the price.

I know it's cheaper buying an aftermarket HID kit that's why I said that would be a cheaper option, go back and re read slowly because your clearly missing what I'm saying :D

You're clearly missing what i'm saying.....

Those prices above are from Seat. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BUY FROM SEAT.

A xenon bulb to fit the OEM xenon lamp can be bought on line along with the suitable ballasts from Veleo for a lot less than what is quoted above. And they will be identical to what comes from VAG dealers.

Simple ;)

I'll direct you to here as an example of bulb prices

Yeah, as S2TTB said, the gas bulbs can be bought from anywhere, HIDS-Direct do D1S and D2S I believe, but I can see where he's coming from with after market HIDS, just like Jon did when he made his own Bi-Xenon headlamps with lenses from USA etc :)

Buying D1S or D1R bulbs from HIDS-Direct or anywhere else is the same as I was suggesting an aftermarket kit, there the same thing, think there was some confusion, lol.

I never once suggested paying the £540 from the stealers when I know you can buy a kit from HIDS-Direct for £90, that would be daft!

You were making out that you would fit a full hid kit - ballasts & bulbs. which again, i see pointless

Yea, not being stupid but fitting just the ballasts or just the HID bulbs wouldn't work, so how else would you get HID bulb in without fit a full HID kit.

Dont want to fall out and im new to the forum but am I missing something here or have you got the wrong end of the stick?
