GTi Badges.

Quick question.

On MKIV Golf GTi's, some have a red i and others have the standard silver i.

What is the reason for this? :dunno:

GTI = 1.8T
GTI = 1.8 / 2.0

But there are some odd ones about, I had an import GTI (1.8T) and it was a silver I ...untill I swapped it - sorry I liked the idea of a red I!

I had a feeling it was something like this. Was there a 1.8 non-turbo GTi though?

Am I also correct in thinking the 1.8's and the 2.0's generally have different alloys too? :dunno:

When the GTI was first released there was a 1.8T and a 1.8, then they introduced the 2.0.

1.8T GTI had different alloys - flat twin spoke to begin this they a multi but many spoke alloy - unless you had the BBS as an option (on the 1.8T one).

If you thinking of buying one, save money and get more power - buy a Cupra!

So how do you explain the diesels badged as GTI models?? They're not 1.8T not 1.8 nor 2.0 but still have a GTI badge of some description above.

??? The only used to be GT's e.g. GT TDI

I think the Red I may have something to do with the power - 90/110 models ??

GT TDI was a higher spec vehicle - the GTI of diesels the TDI was the one below, then they thought what the hell and called it GTI anyway!

There is certainly a GTI tdi. Somwhere like Parkers lists all the variants.

Now I think the diesel GTI's have a red 'I' (but not sure whether this is of the tdi or GTI).

In the uk we had turbo and non turbo GTIs so the turbo came from the factory with the same badge as the non turbo as the non turbo was just a 1.8 on the continent but as GTIs sold so well in the UK we had two versions.
The dealer stuck the red bit on the I.(So some will have it and some won't.)

On diesels the 150 bhp TDI has a GTI badge in this country as it is the same spec as the turbo petrol model (sports suspension etc) and would piss all over it performance wise.

The older GT tdi which is still continued with a 130 bhp version has different suspension, so the 130 and the 115 with PD injection have red Ds and Is and some red Ts as well, with the 110 the original sporty model had a red I on TDI to differentiate it from the cooking 90bhp model with even less sporty suspension and steel wheels.

Don't forget the 180Bhp Golf GTI which has now been added to the 2003 range!! This should have a red T and i apparently, not seen one yet to confirm this though.

Scary thing is that the Golf and Leon are pretty much the same, just have a look at the haynes Golf manual, the whole bonnet area is identical as is the suspension, only the various body panels and interior differ. Very useful to have this manual though helped me sort out my leaky water bottle problem.

If I was a real trainspotter I could play which car did Seat get that part from Audi.. or VW...

Did you know the wing mirrors are on the Leon appear on the Passat as well as the Golf, as do the door handles

You will find most bits on the Leon are the same as parts on the A3 A4 / Octavia/ Golf / Passat / Bora. Make it cheaper for VAG to produce but also costs them a hell of a lot if they find a fault with a part (i.e. locks!!).

Sit in a golf and it feels identicle to the Leon. I could list the parts would it would end up being the majority of the car.

Too true, but you forgot the best bit... we pay a hell of a lot less for the privilage while retaining the exclusivity of owning a Cupra.

Still cannot get over the number of people who stare at my car, and a Golf even a GTi goes past unnoticed
