My day off today so looking forward to an easy morning. Waved the girlfriend off to work and the kids to school then jumped in the car down to the supermarket to do the shopping before it gets to busy. Shot around in record time and then back home. Then it went wrong as i could not open the boot.

No joy with the remote so tried the key in the lock but still it remains shut. Had to drag the shopping through the rear seats and phoned the garage to book it in. The best they can do is Tue,s so i am stuck without a boot till then. The guy i spoke to on the phone seemed to know instantly the problem so i guess i am not the first.

Never mind the car is still driveable and other than the aircon button sticking in (oh and lumpy tickover) this is the only thing thats failed thus far. Still a pain though:(

I guessed i was not alone. The central locking boot lock also failed on my old Polo but thankfully i was still able to use the key. I think it used an air system ? and had lost pressure, anyway that cost £83 but at least this time i wont be out of pocket.

This occasionally works -

Lift the S Badge up as if opening the boot and then whilst holding it up, strike the badge with your other hand - the impact often jumps the mechanism back into place (until the next time it sticks).

Once open, if you don't fancy paying the garage to fix, you can grease up the mech yourself which should sort it out

EDIT - this link shows the Leon, but the mechanism is exactly the same.

Gave it a couple of firm thumps but its staying stuck :( Its prob better it goes in totaly stuck as because if its working when they look at it they will prob send it straight out again.

Mind you ive got to pick the kids up later and a couple of their mates, going to be fun with all the bags stuffed in on top of em:blink:

When the mechanism went on my FR, it would jump back in occasionally to start with and then fialed completely.

The first time the stealers greased it up, but it failed again a couple of weeks later and it was then replaced - luckily for me all under warranty.

You'll more than likely get the 'new' mechanism if it gets changed - I did on the FR. It doesn't have the soft return like the old one, so when you let go of the handle it thumps straight back which is a shame. Hopefully it will behave itself though!

Interesting. Mines an FR and the handle has always just sprung back. Hopefully they will just change the whole thing. Only thing that concerns me a bit is how they are going to get the boot open in the first place

They pop the cover off (the one where you gain access to change a bulb) and pull the rod inside which pops the boot.

Just noticed you have a 2008 model - this will already have the new mechanism, which explains the undamped action. Good to see the design revision has stopped the fault from occurring........

Oh a least it sounds painless to get the tailgate open i had visions of them using a large screw driver and forcing it open, phew !

just read this thread as my leon did the same, i pressed 'lock' on my keys before i shut the boot then when i went to open it later on it wasnt playing ball!

Could anyone describe where to hit the seat badge or anything else to fix it as im sick of asking my mechanically minded brother to help me!

From inside the boot - they remove the inside handles in the tailgate cover and reach in with a bent coathanger to release the boot.

seen it done at a dealers.

This happened to me as well.
Dealer changed the mechanism under warranty and a few months later the same thing happened again. I just put up with it now. Notice it happens more when its either been raining or quite cold. It will open if i persist to try and open it. Bit of a pain but just a good thing that my boot doesnt get much use.

Just had mine replaced as it came and went initially, but then went for 3 days and as I was taking it in it decided to work again. But Seat replaced the unit and the handle now springs back

Mine decided to do the same thing this morning, at 1st it wouldn't unlock with the key but finally managed it when i got bk from work. Seems to be ok now with the key to open and lock but the remote still wont open / lock it.

Makes me laugh 2wks ago the car was just sat there covered in snow and ice for a week yet the boot still worked, now the car was only left sitting for the past 3days and last night was the only frosty night and the thing stops working

Wasn't a happy bunny @ 02.20am this morning when i had to go to work [:@] oh well **** Happens lol

Anyway Happy New Year :p

Since mine was done last year its been fine (touch wood) but the trouble is now every time i dont press the fob enough times and the handle fails to connect i get a real sinking feeling thinking its gone again

Oh the joys of MK4 ownership  My girlfriend thinks i am nuts :funk:

I wont touch the rear wash in cold weather as i am too scared the pipe will pop off and i wont use my heated rear screen in the frost because i am worried the glass will break :D
