Seat Leon 1.6 2001 engine cut out

Hi

I'm wondering if someone can help me.
My Leon rather strangely cut out on me today while I was parking it
The car was rolling downhill so was in neutral - So I cant put it down to - "you just didnt give it enough gas"

Though before it did the rev counter started bouncing up and down like a yoyo and then cut out - It did start again however and was driveable

Does anyone have any ideas on what could have caused it?

Also on a rather general note, my car idles (ever since I bought it 18months ago) at 600rpm I thought this especially low for for my car as all the cars I have driven always idle at 900rpm (ish) Is this normal?

Haha i get the same mate, my idling is all over the place when the car is cold, it also loves to cut out when its cold. I need to book her in somewhere and get things checked over, there are a few threads on cleaning your throttle body with carb cleaner, that helped me for a few weeks.

Hi Jimski

Just came back from a quick drive - and it almost did it again!!
The weird thing is I put the car in reverse and gave it a little juice and off the rev counter went again!! So I quickly put it in first and gave it some and all seemed to clear?

This is very weird - The car is warm though!!

My idle is all over the place whether the car is warm or not, but it wont cut out when its warm, it threatens to though!!

It is strange!!

does ti cut out when you turn the steering wheel?? if so there is a sensor which monitors the revs for the power steering i had this problem with my car i jus disconnected it! amm the sensor is located at the bottom left hand side of the engine near enough exactly below your driver side light i disconnected mine and now she doesnt cut out when im trying to turn the wheel but still does the odd time when im driving so to say must be a common fault with the mk1 leon esp if you have the 1.6 8v like me haha

just had the same problem, kept cutting out when i dropped the clutch especially parking reversing coming to roundabouts, eventually the light came on it was the egr valve so i replaced thet and haven't had a problem since it cost £95 for the part from gsf and i fitted myself two 13mm bolts........
hope that helps

Best check the EGR Vavle (they carbon up very quickly!) Ive got a AZD 1.6 16v 2nd EGR now

Symptoms are

iratic idle

rev flat spots
Shite performance

May not show fault code mine did not untill i took battery totally off and did read on VAG COM then it showed!

Worth a shot!

both teminals mate leave it for 5 min then reconect... Find your radio code first...

You will need to run the cars ecu learning mode with involves running the car at all rev ranges keeping around 4k revs i think, drop both front windows to the bottom and then top and run fans/aircon at fast speed so car feels a high voltage load under running conitions.... few oher small bits but can't remember what yet...

Get a mk4 golf manual (haynes) its in there!!!

I know this might sound like a daft question, but what is connected to the opposite end of the little pipe that fastens to the EGR valve?
