SEAT Cupras on TOCA package for '04

Just spotted this on the TOCA site..

Quote:
Organisers of the Green Flag MSA British Touring Car Championship today unveiled the support line-up for the 2004 TOCA Tour package. Exciting new additions include the hugely successful SEAT Cupra Cup and the all-new Formula BMW UK Championship, which was announced today at the BMW WilliamsF1 Team factory.

The Porsche Michelin Carrera Cup GB, the Elf Clio Renaultsport UK Cup and the Formula Renault UK Championship all retain their slots, promising yet another year of top quality race action for the fans.

Commenting on the latest announcement, TOCA Tour Series Director Alan Gow said: “The SEAT Cupra Cup has consistently provided first class track entertainment during 2003, whilst the Formula BMW concept promises to engender the next generation of single seater stars. Both are very worthy support categories for the BTCC, which has itself gone from strength to strength in 2003.

“We’re also delighted to retain the Porsche Michelin Carrera Cup GB, the Elf Clio Renaultsport UK Cup and the Formula Renault UK Championship, all of which makes for an absolutely stunning package of 5 strongly manufacturer-backed series providing the very best in UK motorsport”.

The Formula BMW concept will offer young drivers an entry-level single-seater opportunity, designed to equip them with the tools necessary to progress to the very top of their sport. In addition to intensive practical training, the series is underpinned by courses in sports management, sporting law, public relations, sponsorship, media training, diet and fitness, vehicle technology and data analysis.

The SEAT Cupra Cup introduced a new generation of fans to motorsport this year as the subject of the ITV1 ‘Racing Rivals’ docu-soap, regularly attracting television audiences in excess of one million. The series will retain its six-event format and as such, will run at selected rounds of the 10-date TOCA Tour series.

The latest announcement serves to underline TOCA Tour’s position as the UK’s premier four-wheeled attraction which provides spectators, manufacturers, teams, drivers and sponsors alike with an unrivalled sporting showcase.

A finalised calendar for 2004 will be announced shortly.

Interesting as it was reported a while back SEAT may join the BTCC as a trade off for having the Cupras racing on the TOCA Tour as well.

good stuff. makes the seat's have even more to offer sponsors and drivers now.

also good for spectators, apart from the fact that it'll cost a tenner more to see seat's now, they now get to see a lot more top action per meeting (no offence to the mini's but btcc is brilliant viewing).

So they're all going to be driving stock 318's driving down the middle of the racetrack pretending it's the M1

seriously - it would be cool to see them in the same package as the tocatour IS a good one - bigger crowd puller than F3/GT

Be even better if they stretch the rules to allow ETCC's

thats great news for the SEAT championship....However, be aware that this may mean no more free tickets as I know ToCA are tight on giving tickets out to championships, one of the sticking points during last years negoitations, so I hear on the grape vine. This is me speaking aloud rather than in a SCN capacity. ToCA prices are a little more expensive.

Dont forget that motors TV has (at least this year) live coverage of whole day of racing at a ToCA event, so you might end up with live SEAT racing if the deal continues.

wonder if this paves the way for a couple of Toledos in BTCC next year?

this was the calendar that ToCA released a while back for 2004. Obviously this is and probably will be subject to change as British GP is now the week before (4th).Remember that SEAT's will not appear at all races.

1&2 10/11 April Thruxton
3&4 1/2/3 May Brands Hatch *
5&6 15/16 May Silverstone
7&8 30/31 May Oulton Park
9&10 12/13 June Mondello Park
11&12 26/27 June Rockingham / Knockhill (TBA)
9/10/11 July British GP, Silverstone **
13&14 24/25 July Croft
15&16 21/22 August Brands Hatch
17&18 4/5 September Snetterton
19&20 18/19 September Donington Park

* CART Event
** Non-championship event

Personally from a brand point of view I think it's a bad move.Seat will now lose all of the marketing points open to them this season as the tourers will take up all of that.I also agree with AndyB,tickets will be a mare to get hold of.
It does,as someone pointed out though, pave the way for a touring entry for the following season for SEAT maybe.

Also, Donington Park clashes with the WRC Rally GB next year - likelihood is it'll be moved to the weekend after as I heard it is stipulated all rounds must have a gap of at least 2 weeks.
So what 6 events do we all think the Cupra's will race at ?
IMO Thruxton, Silverstone, Oulton Park, Rockingham (it'll prob win over Knockhill..) Croft and Brands Hatch on 22nd August ???

oh yes, forgot Donnington. ToCA have already announced that this date will change.

I tend to agree with Chris to an extent with brand. Swings and roudabots.Thruxton for example has a resonably sized paddock, yet at the Touring Cars this year was jam packed, at the F3/GT it ws probably about 2/3rd full, so maybe the village will have to shrink, or possibly not exist in its current state. + Fomrula BMW is also joining.

You also need a paddock pass to get across IIRC (could be wrong, could just be the pit lane paddock -cant remember). I feel that it will be better for tv and spectator coverage, but not so good for SCN members. Tickets and space will be a premium.

(hope all's well Chris btw)

The one Bonus is that people with family commitments such as myself who couldn't go watch all the Supercopa and the BTCC rounds will now be able to see both...

The other benefit will be the more varied trade stands and souvenir stalls that the BTCC attracts compared with the poor showing of trade stands during the Supercopa...Oulton Park being noticeable this year for having not so much as a Bobble hat for sale.

Obviously another bonus will be the bigger crowd atmosphere...

Anyone remember the BTCC in the mid nineties...the crowds were huge...too big at some rounds avery corner was at least three deep in spectators at Silverstone in 1994.

The fact that its on TOCA will make it so much easier for drivers to find Sponsors for the Supercopa this year...with the extra TV possibilities.

I couldnt rememebr as I had a pass, but couldnt rememeber if it was just the fenced area behind the pits.

Well thats bad news then for us lot as most people wont be able to get passes. Hopefully I have three teams in BTCC I can rely on .... i hope

Thumbs up

That is great news if Motors still do LIVE coverage.

Not only will Seat get the coverage of Racing Rivals, but Live too on Motors...

Wow I really hope Ian gets through and win this thing..

This will be MEGA coverage for him and his future!

yeah, think it was £25 quid a ticket this year.

the only btcc race i saw this year was when they were with the champ cars - £40 a ticket and a boring champ car race.
