Outside Air Temp Sensor advice.. - SEAT Cupra.net

My outside temp reading has been acting strangely.. -44 degrees C today

. I took off the passenger side fog light grill and noticed the sensor had fallen from its place in the bumper. I found it dangling and checked it out (physically looks ok) and replaced it in its 'slot' in the bumper. Turned on car and temp reading was --.-- C. Fiddled around with it again and got a reading again of 1 degree C which sounds a little now.

I ran VAGCOM and found this error..

00779 - Outside Air Temp Sensor (G17)
30-10 - Open or Short to B+ - Intermittent

I'm guessing its better to replace this sensor.... do you just solder the new one into the existing wires or do you have to replace the old wiring too?? (would rather not replace wiring.. it would be a pain to do this I am thinking..

Anyone know how much these sensors cost and what the best way of fitting them is?

further back from the sensor there will be a plug and socket mate, you will need to open the plastic trunking that the wiring is protected in.

On a slightly separate note can you turn off the warning beep when it gets below 4 degrees C with VAGCOM?

That always scares the crap out of me... that and the low petrol warning!

Does this sensor effect anything such as air con etc..?

Interestingly its giving me sane readings today 6 degrees this morning and 11 degrees this afternoon

I think it's used as a reference for the climate control system - certainly my father's old mk3 did some weird things with the climate control when it developed an exterior sensor fault

Oh yes, it disables the cooler compressor below - maybe 6C to prevent freezing in parts of theh system. That is mainly the reason why folk give in and sort this problem as having an indicated 4C in high summer means no chiller!

ok cheers, It seems much better today, but I will keep an eye on it as I suspect there is an intermittent fault there.
