awful clanging/ grinding noise uphill.

just been to town and parked in multistory car park, on way up the ramp my car just started making really bad clanging/ griding noise but when at the top it stopped. went up another level and did it again. im not sure if it was the clutch or the gearbox but the pedal has got a bit heavier since but doesnt make a sound on level roads. any ideas on the cause?
