Talking Autocar: TDI Cupra vs 20VT Cupra...

"NO NEGATIVE EFFECTS"

That's the summary of their side-by-side comparison of the car - that's right, they reckon the Cupra TDI is every bit as good as the Cupra 20VT!
Little to choose between them on handling, 30-70mph times. Only fall down is 30-90mph is 8 seconds quicker in the 20VT (in fifth) and more gear stirring required on TDI due to narrower rev-range (peak torque 2k). The good tho: TDI quoted as free revving, with a gruff roar and lots of turbo whistle Both cars are standard btw.
Oddly the 20VT gets larger front brakes (weird - the TDI weighs more!)

Summary:

£15,515 (20VT) / £16,015 (TDI)
0-60mph 8.2/8.6 [the most pointless value for a fwd car!]
0-100mph 22.2sec / 26.0sec
std qtr mile 16.2(87mph)/16.7(84mph)
30-70mph (thru gears) 7.6/8.0
Top speed 142mph/134mph

Test MPG: 16.4mpg/25.3mpg (god they were hammering them)

In reality the tdi is probably a grand and a half dearer as they dont tend to give much discount on them which is a fair bit unless you do big milage. I always thought that servicing was more too on a tdi,but i dont know by how much

If you manage 15k a year, that's 500quid less a year in fuel (est) so it could be quite appealing. I reckon i do about that now..
Only downside is you can't get an IHI for the derv

Are the brakes bigger on both the front and rear? In order to upgrade to the 20VT brakes on the TDi, is it possible / easy? And how is it done?

That's eight seconds in FIFTH btw - notice that through the gears the times are much closer (looking at qtr mile/0-100). Gah, half-reading the post as per usual eh? Slighty weird test that - how often do you pull away at 30mph in fifth? It's iffy in fourth, ideal in third.

Seriously tho - it sounds rather good (apart from the clatter of a taxi) all said and done. I'm no fan of derv due to past experiences but they're getting very good now. Aside from having to change gear more often when accelerating due to a narrower rev range there's not a lot in it.

I know its a bit off topic, but had a test in the new golf GTTDPDI140!! thingy on Sunday. Must admit it felt an improved chasis but as far as get up and go, i think it had left. Will stick to petrol thanks, even though an average of 23mpg really hurts!

I'm sure on the road there'll be f'all in it...however what I need to know is......how does a Revo'd Cupra TDi fare against my Revo'd cupra..that would be what made me decide..

That's prolly what's gonna REALLY p!ss you (and i) off - i reckon the Cupra TDI chipped would kill a chipped 20VT I wouldn't be suprised if a chipped R had trouble too..
Worse still i think the TDI PD150 has a gr8 big FMIC so *may* be prone to less heat soak (assuming of course larger boost doesn't offset this)

Mark you go down to the South West occasionaly don't you?
I did Leeds to Castle Coombe (roughly) in 2hrs 40mins with the computer showing just under 40mpg. Surely that is all you need to know

The diesel in Honda's Accord is supposed to be pretty light (for a diesel). It gets very good reviews in general.

Diesels are not at all prone to heatsoak. Yes the 150's do run FMIC, they also run 1.5bar of boost..
