Question Looking to buy an FR....Petrol or Diesel?

Ok peps advice required.... I do 20 mile a day to and from work don't want something that drinks fuel fancy the 2.0 TFSI but what MPG would I be looking at considering most of the commute would be 'urban' mileage? Would it be more cost affective to get myself the diesel 170 FR ?

Look forward to hearing you advise and suggestions

well i can tell you mine does 300 miles on a tank, and thats currently £70 notes per tank, 23p per mile.

(Mrk 2 petrol cupra)

think your average diesel pops around 500 miles on a tank, so perhaps 14p per mile

see my signature...

As yogie said.... 300 per tank (bit more maybe on a good day, up to 320 is the most I've had)

I do approximately 20 miles to work and back (9.9 one way)
So, about 500 miles a month just for work commute.
Excluding weekend driving

I spend about 120 a month on petrol just for this car, on a 1st to last of the month basis.

Just had my fuel bill for the year from work with my fuel card usage and I now have to do a nice letter to mr taxman about... I have spent £6400 on vpower in 12 months

Average over the last 2000 miles has been 27.2 mpg with some mixed driving and even a top end private run with an M5

I'm getting 40 to 45 mpg in my 170 diesel at the moment. Works out at 15/16p a mile

Mines a 2007 57 plate Mk2 TDi FR (pre-facelift). PD170.

I see around 50mpg, and run approx 520 miles to a full tank of fuel (Shell V-Power).

Obviously Diesel is going to be last more more it just depends how you feel about driving a diesel, its not to every ones liking. In my opinion petrol don't last has long but to me it sounds nicer I.E not sounding like a tank and you get more power through the gears, its a bit more responsive. Ive had both I kept the diesel 6 months before I changed to a petrol never looked back since.

Totally right. I'd suggest test driving both fuel types, and both gearbox types, then decide what you like best. Then combining that with what you can afford! I've never driven a high powered petrol really so I can't comment there

General consensus is that the cost savings from a diesel don't really kick in unless you're doing 15,000 miles a year. The extra cost of the car etc play a part.

If you're not doing many miles, a petrol will be better.

Personally... I went for the diesel for the fuel economy, and the fact I've always wanted a diesel lol!

p.s. Xreyuk...57.3 mpg :0 !

57.3 mpg is a nice figure.
I haven't seen over 40mpg in my 170PD yesterday on a 60 miles motorway drive. It is a bit surprising to be honest because I used to get 42mpg average on motorway in my A4 B7 Quattro which is heavier and 4WD... Will see if something changes after injectors are changed and I get used to the car more. Dpf removal should help more as well.

For some reason today I had a mega journey. Doing 70mph all the way, I did Manchester > Warrington > Chester > Southport and averaged 68mpg by the end of the motorway and 67mpg by the time I got home. Couldn't believe my eyes, that mpg at 70 MPH!

Rare tank though, I've actually been having mpg issues on the motorway! I think I'm just having a good tank, the other tanks have been poor on the motorway (like less than 50mpg) but good in the urban/country road driving.

Latest tank is currently reading 60.4mpg average, but my computer under reads by about 2mpg.

i've got a derv and get about 45-51mpg out of it on my 80 mile round commute. I do find however that for the first 5-10miles of any trip the mpg isn't that great, say 33-37mpg. After that it get a lot better but mainly at a steady speed, if u do too much braking and accelerating your mpg won't be much better than a petrol fueled motor

What cost difference? ATM, with Leons at least, the diesel is the cheaper car. Added to that lower insurance & tax, lower depreciation, and lower running costs, then diesel wins on every count.

OP; see below for my diesel, used mainly around town & some motorway. I used to have a petrol FR; that did around 27mpg on the same usage. I get about 470-500 miles from a tank of diesel, I got about 280-300 miles from a tank of petrol.

You don't do enough miles to warrant a diesel. Don't make the same mistake that I made
