mk4 VW Golf TDI – The Forgotten Detail

For some strange reason I totally forgot about this detail I did last year. It was 3 days of hard graft trying to get this car to show some remnants of a glorious life. If there was ever a detailing job I underestimated it was this one for sure but definitely a detail I learnt a lot from.

Car came is “smashing” condition, thanks Rams and Mrs Rams! My arms still hurt a year on…yes they do lol.

Got the car in the batcave and my heart sank. The reality of the situation was that the whole car needed a wet sand to get rid of the orange peel. Unfortunately I only had the car for 2 days so this was not possible.

The car was fully corrected of swirls and scratches however upon close inspection the orange peel on the bonnet let the whole car down. There no way I was wanted to leave the bonnet in the state it was. Out came the wet and dry and a further 6 hours of wet sanding and machine polishing ensued.

Brilliant stuff Maz... there is nothing on the market that can achieve the level of clarity and gloss that wet sanding does but it definitely takes a lot of time and practice / patience.

Did my brothers golf mk5 again on saturday and after 2 hours on the bonnet alone we decided it wasnt going to get any better and we'd look at wet sanding it when we have more time. The bonnet has had paint in the past and its harder than anything i have ever dealt with before (which is unusual for none factory paint)... the rest of the car by comparison was a doddle but still took us 5 hours to machine (2 stage) and that was with both of us working - me bashing, him refining !
